Backstage with Oscar de la Renta as show begins (AP)

NEW YORK ? All the trappings of the big fashion show were there: models, music, and lots and lots of people. But to one of the world's most famous designers, all that fuss was invisible. When it was time for the models to hit the runway to present his next collection at New York Fashion Week, the only thing Oscar de la Renta saw was the clothes.

Watching the legendary 79-year-old backstage Tuesday night as he prepped the models moments before sending them down the runway, it was clear that de la Renta is virtually immune to the circus and hype that accompanies New York Fashion Week, the twice-annual previews of designer clothing. Never mind the hundreds of tastemakers in the audience from around the world, from buyers and journalists to celebrities and loyal customers, a group that on this night included Vogue editor Anna Wintour, a close friend. Never mind the scores of assistants backstage trying to carry out his vision. For de la Renta, despite decades in the business, each show commands his total attention as a personal unveiling of a labor of love.

For the 15 minutes it took to parade his fall collection on the catwalk, with a reporter from The Associated Press observing by his side, de la Renta sat on a plain stool just out of sight from the crowd, carefully examining each look and speaking to no one. It's a process he's gone through literally hundreds of times ? with two, three or sometimes four fashion shows a year ? since launching his label in 1965. But it never gets old.

"Oh my goodness, show day is not like any other day," de la Renta said an hour before the lights went up. "Regardless of how good or bad a collection might be, it's a letdown after the show is over. It's done. Something you've worked on for months is just over. It's like a wedding day, but at least then you get the wedding night."

He added: "This is a part of you."

He checked the music, tapping his toe to "Maniac" from "Flashdance," and greeted familiar faces popping in pre-show, from his wife Annette to Bergdorf Goodman CEO Jim Gold to stylist Rachel Zoe, who showed de la Renta photos of her baby on her phone. Throughout it all, he was a vision of calm, with no last-minute changes, no barking of orders. The backstage swarm included dressers, makeup artists and publicists, and he seemed to know them all by name as he nodded approvingly at their work. But he also said the buck stops with him.

"I check every look sitting here. They'll tell me to let her (a model) go, but I see everything, every hair out of place or thread that is hanging," he said. "I have to be sure it's coming out the way I envisioned it."

At Tuesday's show, he gently held the arm of each model until he was ready for her to start moving ? in spite of producers telling her to hurry up. He fluffed the tiers of a gown on its way out. And he sent the last model, Arizona Muse, to join the others in the group lineup that ends every preview even though she was a few beats behind the others. The handlers had told her she wasn't going to make it in time for the carefully paced finale parade of all the outfits, and some yelled at her to stop. But de la Renta signaled go, and despite being out of step, she ended up with a few extra moments in the spotlight to show off a frothy silver gown.

The audience couldn't tell whether the delay was a glitch or for effect, but when the applause started as she stepped onto the catwalk, de la Renta smiled. He followed, going out for his bow ? actually a quick wave ? mouthing "Thank you, thank you."

At most shows, security guards usually swoop in at this point, cutting off audience access to designers and their backstage havens. De la Renta, though, lingered near the door, sans entourage, for a quick word with the American Vogue team and flamboyant editor of Japanese Vogue, Anna Della Russo. He watched editors, stylists and retailers make their way to the elevators, giving the occasional handshake or peck on the cheek.

Another show was over, and it's hard to tell if it's his years of experience or personality that allowed him to take it all in stride. Not that other designers are crazed egomaniacs. The process of putting on a fashion show, especially from the inside, is far more professional than Twitter photos and reality shows might suggest.

But even with someone as sunny as Michael Kors, a success story with his recent IPO and celebrity as a "Project Runway" judge, or a creature of California cool like Johnstone Hartig of Libertine, a label that retools vintage designer pieces, frantic backstage moments are not uncommon. Kors' crew on Wednesday morning managed a long line of interviews and well-wishers. There was no way he could peek out at the crowd before his show without causing a frenzy. And Hartig spent the moments before his first model stepped out switching shoes and giving last-minute instructions, adjusting a catwalker's hat and mussing up another's hair; he seemed to have nervous energy to burn.

De la Renta, in contrast, did nothing more than a little pacing before settling into his stool for the show. He seemed to have no second thoughts. He was just excited to get it over with while simultaneously savoring it. He still loves to see it all come together when the models line up, put their smiles on and step out into the spotlights.

"Tomorrow I start the new collection. Really, it started yesterday when I had to decide the colors of next season," de la Renta said. "And then this is a memory. I won't remember this collection. You can ask me in a few days about the blue dress and I'll ask you, `What blue dress?'"

Dr. Terri Kennedy: Looking for Love...

Would you know love if it was right in front of you? I think in many ways we have become a "grass is greener" society. We have so much media stimuli and choice in terms of material goods, it seems like we have become conditioned to continually look for more "features" even in our personal relationships. Social scientists have called this phenomenon the "tyranny of choice." It's like we are addicted to the concept of love but have attention deficit disorder (ADD) when it comes to commitment. With the high divorce rate and breakdown of the traditional family, our vision of love often comes from Netflix, a reality show or a Hallmark card.

What is this thing called love anyway? A few years ago, I had dinner with an old boyfriend. He had been "the one" -- the one I had compared others to and was sure I was destined to marry. We both let the relationship slip through our hands. We had so many options floating around us that we didn't see the treasure in front of us. As we spoke, we realized that time gave us perspective. We acknowledged how foolish we had been.

At the end of the evening, he said "I love you." Since he was married, it took me by surprise. Then, as I looked into his eyes and thought about our conversation, I realized what he really meant. We had moved past what the Ancient Greeks called eros (physical love) and philios (friendship love), and had made our way to agape (unconditional love). It's what the Bible's "love chapter" 1 Corinthians 13 summarizes as: "Patient, kind, not jealous, boastful or rude. It bears, believes, hopes and endures all things. [Agape] love never fails." It dawned on me in that moment how fortunate I was to recognize that powerful form of love.

The search within...

As Buddha said, "You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection." Unconditional self-love is the first step toward success and happiness in life. So where do you start?

  • Spend time noticing who you are. What do you value? What brings you joy? It's like my favorite scene in the movie Runaway Bride. Julia Roberts' character didn't know what type of eggs she liked. She would always order the same kind as her many fianc?s. After she left Richard Gere's character at the altar, she took time to really find out what she liked. Then she was finally ready to marry him. Know who you are and then love every bit, especially the quirks.
  • Become your own best friend. Be kind to yourself. Take care of your health. Get enough sleep. Eat wholesome foods. Exercise regularly. Minimize toxic substances and people. See the "alone" hours as a gift to indulge in something you truly enjoy doing.
  • Begin each day by affirming your worth. Say to yourself, "I am loved. I feel great to be alive! I deserve extreme blessings!" True self-love is not the same as narcissism. A person who goes out of his way to show his importance is actually covering up low self-esteem. When you feel a sense of inner acceptance, there is no need to prove yourself to others.

Looking for a mate...

So what if you've done the inner work and you're really looking to find a partner?

  • Know what you want. Once you know who you are, it's easier to decipher your true heart's desires. Write down what you're looking for in a mate -- then narrow it down to your top three traits. Also, be clear on your "deal-breakers."
  • Get out of your comfort zone. In other words, do things you normally don't do. For example, I just took an introductory week of capoeira -- a form of Brazilian martial arts. I wasn't necessarily there to find a date, but did notice that there were some wonderfully handsome and fit men in the class! Since many moves are done in pairs, you're forced to come face-to-face (and you can see ahead of time if he can protect you). At the very least, you'll get an incredible workout and possibly some eye candy to motivate you to return despite sore muscles.
  • Do more of what you love. You could take the opposite tactic and join an advanced class of something you really love. Then, you are likely to meet others who are just as enthralled and proficient in the practice. For example, for me it would be a yoga immersion program. Think about a hobby or activity you really like. Although online dating is certainly an option, it's helpful to get out and get active!

Love the one you're with...

What if you've already found your partner, how do you nurture love then?

  • Set a shared intention. If you have been graced to find someone who synchs with you and have decided to commit to that person, then it's up to both of you to make it the time of your lives. The power is in your hands. It starts with setting an intention. Outline your shared vision for the relationship.
  • Understand each others' love language. As so clearly described in Dr. Gary Chapman's book The Five Love Languages, take time to gauge what makes your mate feel loved. For example, you may want words of affirmation and he/she may value quality time. Make sure you're speaking your mate's language and he/she knows yours.
  • Show up fully every day. No matter how busy you are, make a point to show you care. Use technology to reach out during the day. A simple "I'm thinking about you" text can go a long way. Then, be present with your mate when you are together. Put down the iPhone, Blackberry or tablet and actually make eye contact.

As they say, "To love is to live." Give love freely, willingly and without expectation, and your life will be full of joy... And love will find you.

San Francisco Gay Marriage Advocates Protest City Hall On Valentine's Day

Flowers are always nice. And substantial jewelry or securing a 7:15 reso at Flour + Water might guarantee at least a month of passion. But for our money, being detained for protesting of your inability to marry your sweetheart might be the most sincere display of devotion we've heard yet.

On Valentine's Day, at least eight same-sex marriage advocates were detained for staging a sit-in at the San Francisco County Clerks Office, protesting marriage inequality, according to SF Appeal.

The protest has become an annual event since 1999, and advocates continued the tradition on Tuesday. According to KTVU, about 30 people gathered outside of City Hall, holding signs reading, "We all deserve the freedom to marry." One was written on a Valentine heart.

About half of the group then proceeded into the building, singing along with an accompanying guitarist and the Oakland Gay Men's Chorus. According to SF Appeal, once sheriff's deputies arrived, eight were detained for refusing to disperse.

According to the Guardian UK, similar protests occurred around the country. The Guardian reported on one such couple in Austin, Texas. "It's very frustrating," said Austin's Tiffani Bishop. "Even little things. I was sick a couple of months ago and was thinking, 'Well what if I have to go to the hospital? She can't come and see me.' Legally we are strangers."

One San Francisco couple, Stuart Gaffney and John Lewis, was legally married in 2008 before the Proposition 8 ban, but, according to the Guardian, still makes the trip to City Hall every Valentine's Day. "Instead, we thank the clerk," said Gaffney. "We go up and present flowers, because we know firsthand that she'd marry us if she could," he said. "Because she did -- she married us in 2008."

California came one step closer to finally legalizing same-sex marriage one week before Valentine's Day when the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals deemed the voter-approved Proposition 8 -- a ban on same-sex marriage -- unconstitutional. The court ruled 2-1 in favor of overturning the ban, saying that it served no purpose other than to "lessen the status and human dignity" of the LGBT community.

"It's good news," said Reverend Dr. William Knight of Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco, an LGBT-friendly parish, to The Huffington Post. "We're fortunate that our state is moving in the direction of honoring love instead of demonizing love."

However, while the decision was a victorious battle, same-sex marriage supporters are still deep in the war. The Associated Press reported:

The ruling will not take effect until the deadline passes in two weeks for Proposition 8's backers to appeal to a larger panel of the 9th Circuit. Lawyers for the coalition of conservative religious groups that sponsored the measure said they have not decided if they will seek a 9th Circuit rehearing or file an appeal directly to the Supreme Court.

It has been an especially busy week for marriage equality, as Washington State officially became the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage on Monday.

"I'm proud our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal," said Governor Chris Gregoire.

According to the Associated Press, opponents in Washington filed a referendum that same afternoon. Should they collect more than 120,577 valid voter signatures, the law will be put on hold pending a November vote.

But Seattle resident Bret Tiderman told the Associated Press that the probably fight ahead wouldn't spoil the current celebration. "You have to relish this moment."

Senate advances mixed-martial arts bill | Albany Watch

Posted by: Jon Campbell - Posted in Uncategorized on Feb 13, 2012

Officials for the Ultimate Fighting Championship are applauding the state Senate for advancing a bill that would legalize mixed-martial arts events, with the legislation moving out of the house?s parks and recreation committee today.

This marks at least the fourth straight year UFC officials have pushed the Legislature to allow mixed-martial arts competitions in New York, one of three states in the country to actively ban them.

The bill passed the state Senate by a wide margin last year?42-18?but has always run into trouble in the Assembly, where Speaker Sheldon Silver and Ways & Means Chairman Denny Farrell, both Manhattan Democrats, have expressed concern about the violent sport.

The sport was banned during former Gov. George Pataki?s administration, but the UFC contends much has been done to bring stricter rules to the sport and improve safety.

?New York is one of only three states that does not allow professional MMA events to take place within its borders,? UFC Chairman & CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said in a statement. ?It?s unfair to the millions of UFC fans in New York who want to see matches in person without having to travel out of state, and we hope this is the first step in legalizing MMA in New York in 2012.?

UFC?s parent company, Zuffa LLC, is locked in a lawsuit with both New York state and New York City, claiming the ban violates the First Amendment.

Those who love horses and love to spend more time with horses must also obtain several knowledge about how to take care of them. This includes serving them, grooming them, and teaching them, but it also includes being aware of what to do in the case of injury. If you intend to expend long periods of time working with a horse or a group of horses, you should have obtainable an equine first aid kit and learn how to apply it appropriately. The right good care of your horse?s emergent needs may mean a great deal to his overall wellness and well-being.

Treating Injuries

A horse with can get an open wound from the few different sources while performing, working, and enjoying outdoors. Just like people, wide open wounds must be cleaned out and treated immediately in order to prevent infection. On your equine first aid kit, you have to have cleanse dry bandages. It is prudent to have a container of sterile and clean saline too. While you may cleanse a wound with plain tap water, it?s not normally readily available and sterile and clean saline is a better way to avoid acquiring toxins on the wound. Once you have cleaned and bandaged the wound, you should speak to your veterinarian, whose contact information should also be as part of your first aid kit .

Curing Eye Wounds

In case your horse damages an eye or if his eye gets annoyed, there are some steps you can take while you wait for help from your equine veterinarian. By using a big cleanse syringe , you may flush the eye with sterile and clean saline when the horse allows it. Be watchful not to panic him or to put yourself in danger. Healing Hoof Damage

It is important that you pay attention to your horse?s toes far more than only making certain his horse footwear is in place. Your horse?s hooves are essential tools, and if they?re destroyed or unkempt, your horse will be in pain, and walking as well as running would be unpleasant. In your equine first aid kit, you need to have a set of pliers which you can use to cut out nails or any other objects which might get caught in the hard bottoms of your horse?s hooves. You also need to have obtainable a set of scissors and a couple of clippers suitable for the care of horse?s hooves.

Other Things You Must Have Handy

When you are piecing together your equine first aid kit , you must also include an germ killing solution including betadine, which will help stave off an infection; a pair of latex mitts to ensure that you are not more exacerbating the potential risk of infections with the dirt on your own fingers; and splint material in case there is an injured leg. You need to have with you an unshakable bowl also. You could pour your saline into this bowl and employ it with your cleanse syringe to flush out wounds. Other things that need to be included are a guide of the location, a flash light with extra electric batteries, along with a temperature gauge.

Anxiety and Panic Attacks Causes and Relief | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Talk to your feelings out loud when you?re having a panic attack. Let them know that you?re the boss and that you really want them gone as quickly as possible because you refuse to be a host for their ridiculousness. Tell them that you?ll be here when they?re gone and that you?ll always outlast them!

Try to look at what is happening to you during a panic attack and focus on reality. Either speak out loud or grab a pen and paper and start to clinically describe the situation at hand. Don?t look at anything that is fear-related as it?s probably not real anyway. Just focus on your body.

If you are particularly prone to panic attacks, it is important that you do things that make you happy. You should try exercising more regularly. Regular exercise releases hormones to your brain that allow you to stay happier and more stress free. Try this if you want to limit your panic attacks.

I found extremely helpful information about anxiety, stress and panic attack relief from these sites: Anxiety Relief Tips , Anxiety Treatment

Finding a great therapist is a wonderful way to deal with panic attacks. During a panic attack, one of the worst things you can do is allow the symptoms to get the best of you. Rather than trying to fight the attack, go with the flow.
