Filmmaker Documents Coast Guard Rescue Crew - Half Moon Bay ...

The life of an independent film maker can be unpredictable and precarious, at least financially speaking, but it can also provide some pretty cool experiences. Documentarian David Wittkower realized that recently when he filmed Guardians of the Gate: The Surf Boats.

The movie documents the U.S. Coast Guard?s second busiest station in the country, Station Golden Gate, the surfmen who serve there and the boats they use.

Wittkower spent part of last year on the station?s 47-foot surfboats.

The aluminum-finished boats are powered by two 435-horsepower motors, can take on 30-foot waves, tow up to 150 tons, speed along at 25 knots (or 28.8 miles per hour) and even roll all the way over. If the boat capsizes, it?s designed to right itself in less than 15 seconds.

While filming, Wittkower and his small crew of cameramen didn?t experience a rollover, but they did get jolted around and slammed as the boats rode up and down 25-foot swells. He found quickly that trying to hold a camera steady while also holding on to the boat to remain standing wasn?t going to work.

"When you get past the Golden Gate, the waves get rough really quickly," he said, adding that he mounted small cameras all over the boat and relied on those a lot because "after a while, you're just holding on."

"It's a bit of a rough ride, but it's fun," he said.

Wittkower was on hand as Coast Guard personnel practiced, patrolled and made rescues near the Golden Gate Bridge in the San Francisco Bay and beyond.

The crew at the station, located on the north side of the bridge, is responsible for helping distressed fishing, recreational and cargo boats; rescuing wind- and kite-surfers who find themselves in trouble; and recovering bodies of people who jump from the bridge, which happens about once every week or two, according to one of the Coast Guard officials in the film.

The latter is, naturally, a duty that hits the crew hard, especially as they think of themselves in terms of being rescuers and lifesavers.

"When you come into the Coast Guard, a lot of times you're coming in to save lives, to be helpful," Boatswain Mate First Class Jessica Shafer explained in the film. "This is one of the few military branches where you can actually truly say that you are there soley to be a rescuer, to save lives, not take lives."

Wittkower noted that during one week in May 2011 10 people jumped from the bridge.

"It's tough for an 18- or 20-year old to have to come in and deal with that," he said. "That's their Iraq."

This isn?t the first time Wittkower, a 15-year Woodland Hills resident and Pierce College instructor, has worked with the Coast Guard. His first project was documenting the Guard?s tall ship, the Eagle. It was Coast Guard representatives who suggested documenting the surfboats and Station Golden Gate.

Previously, Wittkower has produced films about wildland firefighters and rodeos. The latter proved especially difficult because some of the rodeo participants were leary of having a camera close by.

"I asked the Coast Guard if I could film the surfboats and they said, 'Sure, what do you want to do?' I have to say that working with the military is easier than working with cowboys," he said.

In total, Wittkower has produced 11 films and won 27 film festival awards.

He finished Guardians in March. It's already been screened in his native Massachusetts. It will be screened at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, in August during Coast Guard Appreciation Week, and a Maryland PBS station plans to broadcast it soon.

The film will then be broadcast on KQED in November. Here's the program schedule for upcoming broadcasts:

Bicycles + Headphones = Safety Issue | Health | Eugene News ...

EUGENE, Ore. - With one look at a bike rack at the University of Oregon it becomes apparent that a large number of people choose to pedal for the commute.

However getting the attention of some campus-bound cyclists isn?t as easy: many UO students wear headphones while their riding their bicycles.

Kelly McIver, public information officer for the UO Police Department, said using headphones while you ride a bicycle is a distraction.

?It?s just another thing impeding your senses, that keeps you from being as aware as possible from everything going on around you,? he said.

McIver said there are several accidents on campus each year involving bicyclists who violate traffic laws. ?There?s a lot of demand for parking, there?s a lot of cycling activity, and there?s a lot of pedestrian activity. All those things converge and it?s a safety issue,? he said.

KVAL News flagged down a couple of student bicyclists wearing headphones to see what they thought about it.

?A lot of times I ride with one headphone in, and a lot of times I do it because I?m talking on the phone with someone,? Xander Berenstein said. He said a lot of bicyclists get into accidents without using headphones, so he doesn?t think wearing them makes a big difference.

Jack Yates said there?s an intersection on campus where ?lots of people wear small headphones. They?ve got them in both ears and they?re not paying attention and there?s lots of crashes down there.?

Yates knows about distracted bicycling first hand. He walked into an intersection and was hit by a distracted biker when he was in middle school. His hand was run over by a tire, but he was not seriously injured. He said he wasn?t paying attention.

Kasy Wilson was sideswiped by a bicyclist in the rain. She wasn?t wearing headphones at the time, but she couldn?t hear the bicycle approaching over the sound of the rain.

?I think our generation, especially, is really used to multitasking. And so I bet a lot of bicyclists don?t think it?s a big deal.? Wilson said.

Venice Lagoon research indicates rapid climate change in coastal regions

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Research undertaken by the University of Southampton and its associates in Venice has revealed that the sea surface temperature (SST) in coastal regions is rising as much as ten times faster than the global average of 0.13 degrees per decade.

Researchers believe that this is partly as a result of a process known as the 'urban heat island effect'; where regions experiencing rapid industrial and urban expansion produce vast amounts of heat, making the area warmer than its surroundings.

Professor Carl Amos of Ocean and Earth Sciences at the University of Southampton, will be making a speech at the Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association's Research & Management of Transitional Waters international symposium, in Lithuania on September 27. He explains: "The urban heat island effect is a little considered problem with extreme consequences. Take London for example; the air temperature in the capital and the SST of the Thames is always warmer than it is in the rest of the UK. Similarly, in South Korea, an area which has seen rapid industrial expansion, the SST is rising at a rate of 0.26 degrees per decade -- significantly higher than the global average. Two thirds of this rise is explained by local air temperature, which is largely driven by the urban heat island effect."

The world's coastal zone occupies 18 per cent of the world's land mass and it is estimated that 1.6 billion people live in these regions world-wide. The coastal population density is three times the global average and this population is expected to increase 30 per cent by 2025, with trade and infrastructure at the coasts also increasing steadily. Research suggests that in coastal regions of high urban development, human activity is directly warming adjacent coastal waters and that this contribution to global warming at the coastal zones is equal to, or greater than, other factors such as greenhouse gasses.

Professor Amos, who is based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) says: "The Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership Report of 2006 stated that the capacity to define and predict long-term coastal changes due to human causes is 'unknown' and confidence in results is 'low'. This is a major barrier to planning for inevitable changes in coastal SST. Most of these changes at coastlines are caused by human activity, but as it is complex to consider these factors accurately, the official International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) figures do not take these coastal 'anomalies' into account."

In Venice, with 22 million visitors annually and tourism a year-round source of income, the economy remains critically dependent on the city maintaining its status as one of the world's most desirable destinations. Southampton's research in Venice has highlighted the tension between tourism's economic benefits and environmental repercussions. Analyses of seawater temperature trends in the Venice Lagoon have suggested an increase during winter months ten times greater than that predicted globally by the IPCC -- a result directly linked to tourism.

Thousands of jobs and the Venetian economy rely on the survival of the fishing industry, which is dependent on the temperature of the coastal seawater in the Venice Lagoon. A rise in SST in the coastal zone reduces oxygen levels and displaces marine fish and associated nursery grounds, causing catastrophic fish kill phenomena. This research has helped predict the viability of clam fisheries and aquaculture habitats that serve the restaurant trade that caters for millions of tourists every year.

Professor Amos says: "The findings in Venice are the result of a 15 year partnership with the city, which are of great importance and have worldwide applications. Massive urbanisation of the coastal zones means urban heat islands represent an acute problem, particularly for the fishing industry and also for the maintenance of coastal infrastructure. The Thames, like the Venice Lagoon, is a major contributor to and casualty of the urban heat island effect. The consequences of the urban heat island effect need addressing urgently to secure the future of our coastal habitats."

Tilt-shift photography is all the rage. It's based on a type of lens that distorts perspective and focal plane to create atmospheric blur effects. Tilt-shift lenses are usually cray expensive, but Lensbaby makes a whole line of blur-tastic lenses for cheap. Their newest toy for a DSLR, the Spark, only costs $80. But does it deliver anything worthwhile? More »

PFT: Big Ben denies there's a rift with Haley

horseshoes

Earlier today, ESPN reported that a deal between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association is ?at hand,? and that the real officials could be back to work this week.

Asked about the situation, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello quoted George Young, the late Giants G.M., with this admonition regarding negotiations:? ?There is no such thing as close.?

So there?s no deal until there?s a deal.? And, as of right now, there?s no deal.

Confirming that there?s no deal is NBC officiating consultant Jim Daopoulos, who told PFT by phone this afternoon that NFLRA president Scott Green emailed the rank-and-file from the meeting room with the explanation that a deal has not been struck.

Even if/when a deal is reached among the negotiators, it will have to be approved by at least half of the 121 officials.? As Daopoulos explained, the officials badly want to return to work, which could make them likely to accept whatever deal the NFLRA presents to them for a vote.

Still, questions remain.? Dapoulos explained that, as to the reportedly tentative agreement to maintain a 21-official developmental squad that won?t be used during a given season to ?bench? the regular officials, the officials want to know how the group will be assembled, what they will be doing during the season, and (perhaps most importantly) how they?ll be paid.

And while roughly 85 to 100 of the officials engage in a weekly conference call arranged by Ed Hochuli to discuss rule changes and other officiating issues in order to remain ready to work, Daopoulos explained that, as to roughly 20 of the locked-out officials, there?s real concern regarding their ability to pass a physical.

Then there?s the question of using replacements for a Thursday night game and regular officials for the balance of the weekend.? Daopoulos said that the league likely will prefer an all-or-none approach, for reasons of competitive balance.? if, for example, the Ravens lose to the Browns on a bad call from the replacements, the Ravens would be able to legitimately complain that, if they?d been scheduled to play on Sunday, they would have had the benefit of the real officials.

Regardless, no one will have the regular officials until a deal is done.? And a deal isn?t done ? and won?t be done ? until it?s done.

For now, I?m done.

MSI makes AMD-laden GX60 gaming laptop official with A10 heart ...

MSI launches GX60 allAMD gaming laptop with A10 processor, Radeon HD 7970M graphics

We can't say that there's a huge cross-section of buyers who want a gaming laptop but refuse to touch Intel components. Whatever the size, MSI likely has that group sewn up with the official unveiling of the GX60 following a stealth appearance at Computex. The 15.6-inch portable is built as showcase for AMD's latest mobile technology: it revolves around a 2.3GHz, quad-core A10-4600M processor using the Piledriver architecture as well as a Radeon HD 7970M to feed its 1080p screen at full speed. Thankfully, the PC is more than just a marketing vehicle and carries some of the gamer-tuned parts that we've seen in other MSI rigs, such as dual SSDs in a RAID stripe, a low-lag Killer networking chipset and a heavy-duty SteelSeries keyboard. Buying a GX60 may prove to be the real obstacle -- in keeping with most MSI introductions, there's no mention of a price or ship date, and none of the usual suspects have it in stock as of this writing.

Suu Kyi cautiously optimistic for Myanmar future

(AP) ? Thousands of elated supporters greeted Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi with rapturous cheers and a standing ovation as she took to an arena stage in an Indiana city that is home to one of the largest Burmese communities in the United States.

The 67-year-old Suu Kyi, who spent 15 years under house arrest for opposing Myanmar's military rulers and was recently elected a member of parliament, is on a 17-day tour of the United States. She has already met with President Barack Obama and received the Congressional Gold Medal. Suu Kyi voiced optimism for democracy in her Southeast Asian home.

"The important thing is to learn how to resolve problems. How to face them and how to find the right answers through discussion and debate," the Nobel Laureate told the approximately 3,000 people gathered at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.

"We should all have a conscience and not exploit our role in politics," she said. Suu Kyi delivered her speech in Burmese with an English translation by video.

Thousands of Burmese refugees live in Fort Wayne, and hundreds of supporters lined up outside the arena hours before Suu Kyi was due to speak. As the doors opened at 7:30 a.m., supporters flooded inside to claim the best seats.

Factory worker Kaung Shein, 42, said he had been among the approximately 1 million students who took part in a failed pro-democracy uprising to protest Burma's military-backed regime in August 1988. Oxford-educated Suu Kyi rose to prominence during that period.

"We are from the 88 Generation," Kaung Shein said. "We align with her. ... We are very excited to be here. We've been waiting for 20 years."

Thousands of the 1988 protesters were killed and tens of thousands more ? including Suu Kyi ? spent years as political prisoners. Her National League for Democracy party was for years stymied by the junta's iron grip on the country, but Suu Kyi voiced cautious hope.

"The differences and problems we have amongst ourselves, I think we can join hands and reconcile and move forward and solve any problems," she said.

Myanmar's half century of military rule has made the country something of a pariah in the international community, inviting decades of crippling sanctions. But President Thein Sein has introduced political and economic reforms in recent years, and his separate visit this week to the United Nations General Assembly ? the first to the U.S. by a Myanmar leader in more than 40 years ? raised hopes that some of those restrictions could be eased.

Since 1991, when a single Burmese refugee resettled in Fort Wayne ? about two hours north of Indianapolis and 8,000 miles from southeast Asia ? thousands more have followed, many of them relocating under a federal program after years in refugee camps in Thailand. They join other political refugees from a host of countries who have made the city a second home since the fall of Saigon in 1975, thanks largely to the help of Catholic Charities.

For some of Fort Wayne's Burmese residents, Suu Kyi's visit is the first tangible connection with the homeland some hope to return to one day.

Thiya Ba Kyi, a former dentist who earned an MBA after coming to the U.S. in 1994 and now works for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, wants to be a part of the change Suu Kyi is expected to bring. He said he wants to teach his people, who have no experience of freedom, what democracy is about.

"I would like to move back," he said. "Hopefully, they'll need educated people who have experience in a democratic country."

Many Burmese refugees left behind careers and have had to learn new skills while others rely on food stamps to survive.

U Tun Oo was elected to parliament in the 1990 election won by Suu Kyi's party that was nullified by the military regime and served as finance minister for the elected government in exile. Now Tun Oo, who was a construction engineer in Asia, works in a Fort Wayne factory. When he's not working, he heads the local branch of Suu Kyi's party.

"She is the hope for the people," said Ba Kyi, who helps the Burmese opposition in exile. "She can bring democracy again in Burma."

But in her Tuesday speech, Suu Kyi cautioned her supporters ? this time in English ? that she is not infallible.

"A popular leader is not the same as a good leader," Suu Kyi said. "I hope you keep that in mind."

OUPblog ? Blog Archive ? Immigration policy debates in the 2012 ...

By Louis Desipio

Popular concern about US immigration policy has increased dramatically over the past two decades. During this period, the resources and technologies for enforcement of immigration law have also increased considerably. The remainder of US immigration policy ? particularly questions of how many immigrants the United States should admit, who should be eligible to immigrate, and what should be done about immigrants resident in the United States who reside in the country without legal status ? see much less consensus. President Obama and Governor Romney propose starkly different immigration policies, particularly on this final question of what to do about unauthorized immigrants resident in the United States.

In the 2008 presidential race, candidate Obama made a commitment concerning immigration that he didn?t fulfill. In that promise, however, can be found the roots of the 2012 Obama campaign?s approach to immigration policy. The promise was he would propose ?comprehensive immigration reform? in his first year as president. The exact meanings of comprehensive reform weren?t defined, but broadly included additional enforcement particularly enforcement focused on employers, legalization for many of the unauthorized immigrants resident in the United States, guest worker programs, and perhaps, a change to the foundation of eligibility for legal immigration to the United States. The specifics proved irrelevant as Obama didn?t make immigration reform a priority in his first two years of office. In the next two years, Republican control of the House of Representatives made unlikely any major immigration legislation that could receive support from the Republican House majority and the Obama administration. Obama and the Democrats did seek to pass a limited form of legalization that targeted young adults who had been brought to the United States as children and had graduated from high school (the DREAM Act). Although this bill passed the House and received support from a majority of US Senators, it was unable to overcome a filibuster in the US Senate led by the Republicans.

Realizing that comprehensive reform was unlikely, Obama increasingly used executive branch authority to focus enforcement efforts away from the young adults who would potentially benefit from the DREAM Act as well as away from unauthorized immigrants who had legal immigrant- or US citizen-family members. In the months before the election, the Obama administration established a two-year legal status that would allow young adults who had migrated without authorization to the United States as children to be able to remain in the country legally and to work. These efforts were criticized by advocates of immigration restriction, but serve as a core of the Obama approach to immigration in the 2012; Obama calls for an immigration system that is more ?fair, efficient, and just.? These positions don?t reflect a move away from a call for comprehensive immigration reform, but instead a tactical recognition that, in the contemporary political environment, neither party will compromise on immigration. Obama also used the power of the presidency to oppose state laws that sought to use state police to enforce immigration law and to challenge these state efforts in the federal courts.

Going into the campaign, Governor Romney didn?t emphasize his positions on immigration policy. These included largely non-controversial positions such as using legal immigration to attract more highly skilled immigrants and to make guest worker programs more efficient for employers, with few specifics on how he would achieve either goal. The Republican Party primaries, however, shifted immigrant enforcement and support for state efforts to enforce immigration law to the center of the Romney immigration agenda. At the core of Romney?s positions is his support for ?self-deportation,? the proposition that laws and public policy should make life so difficult for unauthorized immigrants to live in the United States that they will voluntarily return to the their countries of origin. Central to this notion of making life more difficult for the unauthorized is support for state laws to empower state and local authorities to enforce immigration law. Many states have passed such laws over the last several years. Perhaps the best known is Arizona?s SB 1070, which was the subject of Supreme Court review in 2012. Romney has also promised to veto the DREAM Act should it come to his desk as president.

The immigration debate between the two candidates, then, largely turns on the question of what to do about unauthorized migrants resident in the United States. Neither candidate has concrete positions on whether the standards for legal immigration ? which results in more than one million immigrants to the United States each year ? should be changed as some have proposed, or whether the United States should expand its programs to allow for short-term guest worker migrations to the United States (other than Romney?s call to make them more efficient). Each of these policy debates would need to be part of any serious reform of US immigration policy.

Apple Asks for More Damages, Sales Ban; Samsung, New Trial

Here comes the hammer. The Apple hammer, that is, as attorneys representing the company filed a motion late Friday requesting a U.S. sales ban against Samsung devices and an additional $707 million in damages as a result of last month's ruling against Samsung in the two companies' patent showdown.

The sales ban would effectively make Samsung a non-competitor to Apple in the United States, as Apple is requesting that it cover 26 smartphones and three tablets, in addition to, "any other product with a feature or features not more than colorably different from any of the infringing feature or features in any of the Infringing Products."

The request likely puts Samsung's recently released flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III, squarely in Apple's sights. Apple doesn't name the device directly, but it does bring up the concept of brand loyalty ? especially among first-time smartphone buyers ? as a reason for the sales injunction and increased damages.

"This Court has recognized that this is a critical transition period for the mobile phone market, because a large number of potential customers are abandoning feature phones for smartphones," reads Apple's motion. "These first-time smartphone purchasers are likely to develop brand and platform loyalty that will affect future sales and market share for years to come, which makes the harm to Apple from loss of follow-on and downstream sales particularly severe."

The Galaxy S III hit 20 million in total sales over the first three months of its existence, besting Apple's iPhone 4S as the best-selling smartphone in the U.S. for the month of August. Worse, for Apple, that's the first time that the iPhone 4S has been bumped off the top of the charts since the smartphone's debut in October of 2011.

In other words, Apple has every reason to fear Samsung's growing influence in U.S. markets.

As for the cash, Apple's $707 million figure splits out as follows: $400 million as a damage award for Samsung's infringements (Lanham Act), $135 million for Samsung's willful infringements of its utility patents (Patent Act), $121 million for supplemental damages for Samsung sales since July 1 (as the jury only considered sales up to June 30 when evaluating damages), and $50 million for interest until Samsung pays the final total.

Samsung, in response, is asking the court for a new trial and a reduction in damages.

"The Court's constraints on trial time, witnesses and exhibits were unprecedented for a patent case of this complexity and magnitude, and prevented Samsung from presenting a full and fair case in response to Apple's many claims," reads Samsung's motion.

The 2 Varieties of Place a burden on Human resources

Almost all data processing data, no matter whether to get choice help or obligation uses, depends on the identical cornerstone, the collection along with control associated with economical data. This process starts with five important methods; a data processing enterprise, intending dilemma, accounting period, trades as well as the information technology situation. Sales stats are amassed with an it entity ? the economical product for the purpose financial reports might be geared up. The business can be accounted for as a stand alone from its manager and also some other it entities around the identical business. An accounting business doesn?t have to be exactly like a legitimate company. For instance, a new section in a company or perhaps university or college is probably a good human resources business, although exactly the organization, or perhaps the school will be the authorized company ? able to key in legal papers and take legal action on its own.

Data processing organizations usually are assumed to acquire everlasting existence ? that?s, they?re going to exist for the actual near future, until there?s apparent studies on the contrary. A couple of people currently have certain day-to-day lives ? Olympic Games preparing businesses in addition to amusement live performance visit firms are usually instances. Various other businesses might run in really serious financial difficulties that will pressured the moving forward lifestyle. Nevertheless, almost all organisations are usually presumed to generally be going fears along with, even as will dsicover, their particular fiscal reports reflect this important premiss.

With the proceeding issue mother nature regarding data processing organizations plus the must are accountable to either operations and also additional functions with standard time intervals, an extra strategy is actually used ? that surrounding a sales time. This splits the actual everlasting lifetime of your thing directly into specific canceling periods ? ideal to your use to be made from your financial statements. The most common periods tend to be regular monthly with regard to control inner requirements plus yearly or perhaps 6 per month intended for commonly intent alternative canceling.

Each and every human resources entity undertakes some sort of economic activity. Most of these things to do cause human resources transactions ? economical occasions this outcome this financial position of your small business and the can be faithfully scored. Widespread types of it dealings are generally sales regarding dollars or perhaps upon credit ratings, buy for income or perhaps credit ratings, business financing loans, amounts as a result of suppliers, funds provided by proprietors. Typically, situations are not recognized as sales purchases right up until they can be considerably concluded. Such as, requests positioned by buyers usually are partial until finally solutions as well as companies are given. This kind of requests usually are not accepted as orders, available on the market characterize essential selections. Whenever an information technology enterprise begins surgical procedures, it is transactions tend to be upon reference papers ? for instance debts, bills, inspections, plus lender transactions. Beyond this concept, your transactions are generally got into from the financial records with the company ? in respect the actual certain treatments of which makes the particular records tend to be appropriate.

Orders tend to be documented reported by their own affect your data processing equality, which represents the financial position in the enterprise. Along at the beginning of any small business, the entity gets funds capita by reviewing the seller and may even lend further cash personal loans from outsiders. The actual organization featuring a good thing dollars although owes this particular sum in whole to their funders: as entrepreneurs? a guarantee and also financial obligations. Because of the going problem nature involving sales agencies along with the must are accountable to either administration and also outside functions at common periods, an extra idea will be put into practice ? that from your sales time period. This particular divides the actual long life of the actual business into finite credit reporting intervals ? suitable to the employ to be crafted from your financial reports. The most common durations tend to be monthly regarding operations inner reasons plus annually as well as 6-8 per month regarding frequently goal alternative confirming.

Recent research shows that both men and women eat more when in the presence of a woman, and less when in the presence of a man. Reasons for this phenomenon are not yet known, but knowing that going out with the girls may tempt you to overeat may give you the edge you need to face your next ?girls? night out? with more self-control.

Don?t be hard on yourself when trying to lose weight. Give yourself a break. Know that sometimes you won?t make it to your workout, sometimes you?ll eat badly and sometimes you will want to stop. But being easy on yourself means that you forgive yourself and can continue until you lose the weight you want to lose.

An easy weight loss tip is to buy red pepper flakes and use them in your breakfast or lunch. Research has shown that people that use red pepper early in the day eat less food later on. Spiced food is more enjoyable and satisfying than bland food also, so it helps your dining experience be pleasant.

Remove one unhealthy thing from your diet. If you are new to dieting, you might want to take it slow. Cut out one unhealthy thing from your diet, like soft drinks. Substitute the unhealthy thing for something healthy. More often than not, you will see surprisingly dramatic results for that one, simple substitution.

To curb your calorie intake, use a smaller plate at your meals. Instead of grabbing a large dinner plate, use a smaller salad plate for each meal. It will help you keep portion sizes in check and trick your mind into thinking you are eating much more than you actually are.

Steaming foods that you would ordinarily bake or fry is a great way to decrease the fat content in your food. Steaming food will cook it without adding butter or any other unhealthy supplement. Choose fresh foods with lots of flavor, that way steaming or grilling can be a great way to cook your meals without adding fat.

Eat a rainbow of vegetables throughout the week to make sure you?re getting all the vitamins and minerals you need from them. Each color represents different nutrients, and it also helps you keep your meals different and interesting. Losing weight is easy when you make it fun, so try all different vegetables to see what you love!

When trying to lose weight it is a good idea to have some long term goals. For example, you could try to run 200 miles on the treadmill by the end of the month. Constantly striving for that number could be all the motivation that you need to keep up a fitness program for an entire month and subsequently lose a lot of weight.

To achieve healthy weight loss, you need to begin with good education. Most Americans simply do not have the correct information about the human body and efforts to train it. To get the most out of your weight loss plan, implement the strategies in this article and aim for the stars.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only

When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features -- Test Drive -- was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don't despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn't work with every app. The IMDb app works fine -- you can even watch movie trailers on it! -- but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There's very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

Dawn Spacecraft Finds Signs of Water On Vesta

Would you prefer they say they found DHMO?

I mean, for public release, saying "water" makes more sense.

And anyway, water consumption for human use would be minimal, if it all. That water, unless it is deep underground, has been bombarded by cosmic rays for eons, it may be too radioactive in the form of Tritium to be safe.

Most likely, it will be used as fuel/reaction mass or as shielding from Cosmic Rays..

Apple patent application has iPhones text when calls don't reach spotty coverage areas

Apple patent application has iPhones text when calls don't reach spotty coverage areas

If you're already using Android 4.0 or iOS 6, you're likely familiar with the option to send a pre-made text reply to incoming calls you can't take. But what if it's your own call that won't go through, at no fault of your own? Apple may have that covered through a patent application that could keep the accusations to a minimum. If flaky reception at the destination prevents your call from connecting, the proposed idea has your iPhone automatically send a text message indicating that you've at least tried to get in touch. Recipients with Apple's hardware contribute to their own solution in this world: the message code is a cue to measure the signal strength and flag the location as a weak point in the carrier's network. Whether or not Apple acts on its concept is as much of a mystery as with most other patents, although we're hoping it becomes real. If anything's going to strain a relationship, it shouldn't be dodgy coverage.

US unemployment claims fell last week to 382,000

(AP) ? The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell only slightly last week to a seasonally adjusted 382,000. The level suggests hiring remains weak.

The Labor Department said Thursday that applications declined by 3,000 from the previous week, which was revised up. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose for the fifth straight week to 377,750, the highest level in nearly three months.

Applications were skewed higher two weeks ago by the fallout from Hurricane Isaac. But a Labor Department spokesman said there were no special factors last week.

Weekly applications are a proxy for layoffs. When they consistently fall below 375,000, it typically suggests hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Employers added only 96,000 jobs last month, below the 141,000 in July and much lower than the average 226,000 added in the first three months of the year. Recent job gains are barely enough to keep up with the growth of the working age population and aren't enough to rapidly drive down unemployment.

"Businesses clearly remain reluctant to aggressively boost their workforces," said Jim Baird, chief investment strategist at Plante Moran Financial Advisors, in a note to clients.

The unemployment rate dropped in August to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent. But that was only because fewer people were looking for work. The government only counts people as unemployment if they are actively looking for work.

The number of people receiving unemployment aid fell sharply earlier this month. About 5.2 million people received benefits the week ending September 1, the most recent data available. That's a drop of about 220,000 from the previous week.

The economy isn't growing fast enough to support much more hiring. It grew at a tepid 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, down from 2 percent in the January-March quarter and 4.1 percent in the final three months of last year.

Growth isn't likely to get much better for the rest of this year. Economists expect the economy to grow at a roughly 2 percent pace.

High unemployment and sluggish growth prompted the Federal Reserve last week to announce several major steps to boost the economy. Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed will buy $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities a month until there is "substantial" improvement in the job market.

Bernanke said at a news conference that high unemployment is "a grave concern" that causes "enormous suffering."

First-ever imaging of cells growing on spherical surfaces

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Shengyuan Yang, Florida Institute of Technology assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, with graduate student Sang Joo Lee, has published a paper on the first-ever imaging of cells growing on spherical surfaces. The paper is published in the online journal Review of Scientific Instruments, and will appear later in September in the print version.

The potential biomedical applications of the researchers' technique include new strategies and devices for the early detection and isolation of cancer cells, facilitating new methods of treating cancer tissues. "We also foresee new strategies and techniques to control the differentiation of stem cells and the morphologies and structures of the resulting cells and tissues," said Yang.

The effects of substrate stiffness on cell behaviors have been extensively studied; however, the effects of substrate curvature are not well-documented. The curvature of the surface on which cells adhere can have profound effects on cell behaviors, according to Yang.

"To reveal these cell mechano-biological responses to substrate curvatures, we have introduced a novel, simple, and flexible class of substrates, polyacrylamide gels embedded with micro glass balls ranging in diameter from 5 mm to 2 mm, to culture cells. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental attempt to study cell responses to spherically-shaped substrates. Our cell culture experiments imply that this class of substrates, micro glass ball embedded gels, can be useful tools to study cell mechanobiological responses to substrate curvatures, related cell and tissue engineering researches, and biomedical applications, such as cancer detection and treatment, and the control of stem cell differentiations, for example," said Yang.

This work was supported with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Program. The reviewer of this paper at Review of Scientific Instruments commented, according to Yang: "This is a clever idea. . . This work has great potentials with high impact."
