Ukraine players' food poisoning caused by salad

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:08 a.m. ET June 7, 2012

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -A bad salad at a German hotel might have caused the food poisoning that sickened 10 Ukraine players before their final European Championship warm-up game against Turkey on Tuesday.

Ukraine team doctor Leonid Mironov says the players were hit by "the bad effects of eating a salad."

Team spokesman Oleksandr Glyvynskiy tells The Associated Press there will be no further investigation into the cause of the food poisoning, despite head coach Oleg Blokhin saying on Ukrainian TV that "it may have been sabotage."

Glyvynskiy says all players have recovered well and that the full 23-man squad was expected to complete a training session later Thursday, four days before the team's Euro 2012 opening game against Sweden.

Today's climate more sensitive to carbon dioxide than in past 12 million years

ScienceDaily (June 6, 2012) ? Until now, studies of Earth's climate have documented a strong correlation between global climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide; that is, during warm periods, high concentrations of CO2 persist, while colder times correspond to relatively low levels.

However, in this week's issue of the journal Nature, paleoclimate researchers reveal that about 12-5 million years ago climate was decoupled from atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. New evidence of this comes from deep-sea sediment cores dated to the late Miocene period of Earth's history.

During that time, temperatures across a broad swath of the North Pacific were 9-14 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than today, while atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations remained low--near values prior to the Industrial Revolution.

The research shows that, in the last five million years, changes in ocean circulation allowed Earth's climate to become more closely coupled to changes in carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere.

The findings also demonstrate that the climate of modern times more readily responds to changing carbon dioxide levels than it has during the past 12 million years.

"This work represents an important advance in understanding how Earth's past climate may be used to predict future climate trends," says Jamie Allan, program director in the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences, which funded the research.

The research team, led by Jonathan LaRiviere and Christina Ravelo of the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), generated the first continuous reconstructions of open-ocean Pacific temperatures during the late Miocene epoch.

It was a time of nearly ice-free conditions in the Northern Hemisphere and warmer-than-modern conditions across the continents.

The research relies on evidence of ancient climate preserved in microscopic plankton skeletons--called microfossils--that long-ago sank to the sea-floor and ultimately were buried beneath it in sediments.

Samples of those sediments were recently brought to the surface in cores drilled into the ocean bottom. The cores were retrieved by marine scientists working aboard the drillship JOIDES Resolution.

The microfossils, the scientists discovered, contain clues to a time when Earth's climate system functioned much differently than it does today.

"It's a surprising finding, given our understanding that climate and carbon dioxide are strongly coupled to each other," LaRiviere says.

"In the late Miocene, there must have been some other way for the world to be warm. One possibility is that large-scale patterns in ocean circulation, determined by the very different shape of the ocean basins at the time, allowed warm temperatures to persist despite low levels of carbon dioxide."

The Pacific Ocean in the late Miocene was very warm, and the thermocline, the boundary that separates warmer surface waters from cooler underlying waters, was much deeper than in the present.

The scientists suggest that this deep thermocline resulted in a distribution of atmospheric water vapor and clouds that could have maintained the warm global climate.

"The results explain the seeming paradox of the warm--but low greenhouse gas--world of the Miocene," says Candace Major, program director in NSF's Division of Ocean Sciences.

Several major differences in the world's waterways could have contributed to the deep thermocline and the warm temperatures of the late Miocene.

For example, the Central American Seaway remained open, the Indonesian Seaway was much wider than it is now, and the Bering Strait was closed.

These differences in the boundaries of the world's largest ocean, the Pacific, would have resulted in very different circulation patterns than those observed today.

By the onset of the Pliocene epoch, about five million years ago, the waterways and continents of the world had shifted into roughly the positions they occupy now.

That also coincides with a drop in average global temperatures, a shoaling of the thermocline, and the appearance of large ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere--in short, the climate humans have known throughout recorded history.

"This study highlights the importance of ocean circulation in determining climate conditions," says Ravelo. "It tells us that the Earth's climate system has evolved, and that climate sensitivity is possibly at an all-time high."

Baltimore Stay-at-Home Dads connect on Facebook Maryland Family

Five-year-old Max Klinefelter doesn?t understand why some moms stay at home while some dads work. ?It?s supposed to be the other way around,? Max recently told his parents.

Since before he was born, around the time his older brother, Will, turned 2, Max?s father Chris Klinefelter of Cockeysville has been a stay-at-home dad. His mom, Jessica, works full time as a project manager for an engineering firm.

Klinefelter?s first few months as a stay-at-home dad were harder than he expected. With a newborn and a preschooler, Klinefelter of Cockeysville often felt overwhelmed and a bit lonely. The days were long and lacking adult conversation. Unlike stay-at-home moms, Klinefelter didn?t have any peers of the same sex to talk to during the day.

So, Klinefelter went on a hunt for Baltimore area dads. He found Daddy?s Home, the national at-home dad network, a nonprofit for stay-at-home dads. Through the website www.athomedad.org, Klinefelter found other stay-at-home dads and started an official group he called Baltimore Dads. The group of about 10 e-mailed about playgroups and dads? nights out, and also about issues they were facing in everyday life as stay-at-home dads.

There is safety in numbers and finding support is arguably the toughest part about being a stay-at-home dad. While women have a plethora of mommy groups to join, choices for dads are limited. Not only are dads sometimes not allowed to join the mothers? groups, but they are often snubbed by moms at playgrounds, swimming pools, libraries, or any other public place a dad isn?t normally seen during the day.

In 2006, Klinefelter created www.baltimoredads.org which led to the group?s Facebook page where most of the conversation and play date setting happens.

?One of my kids wrote all over the floor with permanent marker. I posted about how I get permanent marker off the floor,? Klinefelter says. ?You get a million responses for something like that. Half of them serious.?

Dads also post about everything from potty training and tantrums to recommendations on good preschools or fun playgrounds. Along with the Baltimore Dads Facebook page, Klinefelter and other area stay-at-home dads frequent social media sites including www.dcmetrodads.com.

Social media is essential for stay-at-home dads, says Al Watts, president of Daddy?s Home. About 2,000 dads belong to the National At-Home Dad Network, and they often use our website to talk about parenting issues and find other dads in their areas. The website helps dads start their own stay-at-home dad groups. Though Facebook and Twitter are popular among stay-at-home dads, so are blogs geared to fathers.

?Social media is helpful. Guys get on there with questions or problems, and other guys answer them,? Watts says.

The Klinefelters are among a small, but growing minority of families with mothers as breadwinners and fathers as primary caregivers. The 2010 U.S. Census reported 154,000 full-time stay-at-home dads, though that number is probably much higher because this didn?t take into account fathers working part-time or working from home.

Though still outnumbered by women, fathers are making a mark. They have started parenting blogs and Daddy playgroups, and they don?t feel shy about taking their kids to library story times or ?Mommy and Me? gymnastics classes. Responding to the growing number of stay-at-home dads, Daddy?s Home hosts an annual convention for stay-at-home dads in Washington, D.C.

Andrew Huppert of Crownsville is also a stay-at-home dad that says staying at home with his two sons, Thomas, 6, and Benjamin, 2, was initially disorienting. His wife, Nicolle Bougas is an obstetrician/gynecologist, so financially it made more sense for Huppert, an accountant to stay-at-home.

Huppert was forced to transition from a full-time professional employee to a full-time event planner. Keeping busy and finding other dads helped Huppert from sliding into depression, though he did experience difficult days emotionally.

?It?s a lonely experience,? Watts agrees. ?It?s a little uncomfortable at first.?

A social support network can help a dad feel happy and successful, Watts says.

UK's queen 'touched' by jubilee's 'happy atmosphere'

The queen and the royal family appear on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony for a royal wave in front of thousands of Brits who are helping the nation's monarch celebrate 60 years on the throne.

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

Updated at 1:06 p.m. ET: LONDON - As her jubilee celebrations drew to a close, Queen Elizabeth II said the events had been a "humbling experience," adding that she will treasure "the countless kindnesses shown to me in this country and throughout the Commonwealth."

"It has touched me deeply to see so many thousands of families, neighbors and friends celebrating together in such a happy atmosphere," she said in a message to the nation, according to the BBC.

Queen Elizabeth's message was broadcast across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. She also thanked the organizers for their hard work.

"It has been a massive challenge, and I am sure that everyone who has enjoyed these festive occasions realizes how much work has been involved," she said.?"I hope that memories of all this year's happy events will brighten our lives for many years to come."

The Archbishop of Canterbury spoke of the Queen's "very public act of dedication" when she succeeded to the throne and pledged her life to the nation. It's a phrase that sums up both the sixty years of her reign - and her determination not just to carry on with, but to enjoy today's anniversary to the full. ?ITN's Tim Ewart reports on Her Majesty's day ''without Prince Philip by her side."

But, even though she was surrounded by family and greeted by thousands of her subjects, without her husband Prince Philip at her side?Queen Elizabeth cut a lonely figure.?

Philip, who turns 91 on Sunday, was taken to hospital?with a bladder infection?on Monday as millions of people turned out -- despite the cold and rain -- to honor 86-year-old British monarch.?Millions more attended street parties up and down the country.

Despite Philip's illness, many members of the royal family, including Charles, Camilla, and Princes William and Harry sat in a royal box to watch the show, performed on a specially erected stage outside the palace.?

The queen was cheered as she arrived partway through the show, wearing a gold lame cocktail dress under a dark cape. It was decided before Philip's illness that she would watch only part of the concert.?

Money Matters: Nearly Half of Americans Would Fail Financial ...

As millions of Americans continue to be unemployed and uninsured, a thorough understanding of personal finance is more important than ever. However, a National Foundation for Credit Counseling survey indicates that Americans come up short on managing their money.

The 2012 Financial Literacy Survey spoke with 1,007 adults over age 18 between March 16 and 19 about financial matters including budgeting, bills, debt, savings, spending, and credit.

While most people know the importance of something as basic as keeping a budget ? easier said than done, say more than half of survey participants admit they don?t keep track of their spending using a budget, and the same likelihood has held true for the last five years.

Budgets aside, paying bills on time is perhaps the first step in establishing financial responsibility, but 77 million Americans fail to do so. Blame the economy or just forgetful nature, but the inability to pay bills on time has increased from 28% in 2011 to 33% in 2012.

When it comes to living beyond their means, survey participants have shifted their attitudes about debt since last year, with 27% of survey participants saying they would initially ask friends and family for help alleviate debt. Last year, 8% of people would approach creditors for debt solutions, but that percentage has increased to 13% this year.

An additional sign of poor financial planning, 40% of participants are saving less, and 39% say they are not saving for retirement. The number of people actively saving has decreased since the 2010 survey, with 67% in 2010, 64% in 2011, and 59% in 2012.

When income doesn?t cover all the expenses, or when more financial emergencies popped up than the budget or savings allows, credit cards provide the financial cushion for millions of Americans. The survey indicates that about 39% of survey participants carried debt from month to month since 2010, but this year, the number of new credit card applications and rejections has increased. Concern over identity theft and credit scores has prompted more Americans to check their credit scores, but 44% have never reviewed this vital piece of financial information.

So, if given a self-assessment, who passes the financial literacy test? Forty-two percent of survey participants admit they truly don?t understand their own personal finances, and would give themselves a C, D, or F grade, and 58% would give themselves an A or B, compared to 65% who would have given themselves an A or B in 2010.

Queen Elizabeth and crowds brave rain for jubilee armada

LONDON (Reuters) - Queen Elizabeth joined an armada of 1,000 vessels and more than a million cheering spectators on Sunday to celebrate her 60th year on the throne with the most dazzling display of pageantry seen on London's River Thames for 350 years.

Pealing bells greeted the start of the flotilla as the queen's gilded royal barge sailed alongside a colourful and eclectic array of boats from leisure cruisers and yachts to rowing boats, a Hawaiian war canoe and Venetian gondolas.

Organisers said 1.2 million people, many waving "Union Jack" flags, braved typically inclement British weather to catch a glimpse of the procession along the seven mile (11 km route) as riverbanks were turned in a blur of red, white and blue.

After four hours on the river, much of it spent standing to review the flotilla passing by, the 86-year-old monarch was still smiling and showing a resolute "British stiff upper lip" as the event concluded in driving rain with a bitter wind.

Elizabeth, her 90-year-old husband Prince Philip and the other senior royal family members even jigged in time to the strains of "Rule Britannia" as the last vessel carrying an orchestra and drenched singers serenaded her.

"It made me proud to be British. It'll be a long time before London has another day like this," said Sandra Evans, 68, a retired shop worker from east London who was wrapped in a soaking wet British flag.

"The royal family has taken a lot of abuse from people over the years, but they've shown their class today."

Up and down the country, millions of people attended diamond jubilee street parties in honour of the sovereign, the only British monarch after Queen Victoria to have sat on the throne for 60 years.

The London pageant, the highlight of four-days of public celebration, drew crowds from Britain and beyond as the queen, wearing a silver and white dress with a matching coat, sailed down the Thames in the royal barge, "The Spirit of Chartwell".

Also on board were heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, his eldest son Prince William and new wife Kate, a global fashion trendsetter who wore a vivid red Alexander McQueen dress and matching hat.

"It was amazing. It felt like stepping back in time and seeing history come to life," said American student Ashley Nissim, 21, who is studying in London.

From New Zealand Maoris in traditional cloaks paddling a canoe to sailors and costume pirates, the flotilla boasted participants from every corner of the planet in a colourful display that recalled Britain's history and nautical past.

There were even vessels from the 1940 evacuation of British and Allied troops from Dunkirk in northern France - a famous rescue performed by crafts of all shapes and sizes and a celebrated piece of British history.

Organisers said Sunday's river pageant, reminiscent of a Canaletto canvas from the 18th century, was the largest of its kind since a similar spectacle was held for King Charles II and his consort Catherine of Braganza in 1662.

LONDON LANDMARKS

The flotilla passed under 14 bridges and past landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, St Paul's Cathedral, and the Tower of London, where the picturesque Tower Bridge bascules were raised in salute.

One of the boats taking part, "Amazon", featured in diamond jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria, Elizabeth's great-great-grandmother, held in 1897 when Britain's empire spanned much of the globe.

Although the queen is still head of state in 16 countries from Australia and Canada to tiny Tuvalu in the Pacific Ocean and head of the Commonwealth, Britain is a shadow of its former imperial self.

Nevertheless, the pageant appeared on news sites around the world and was among the top trending topics on the Twitter micro blogging site, with messages ranging from congratulatory to comic. Interest in the festivities and affection for the queen extended to former colonies such as Canada.

"She is a kind of living history," marketing expert Amanda Batchelor told Reuters from her home in Toronto where she was watching on television.

Historians and commentators say the pomp and spectacle of British royal occasions gives the country a sense of national pride at a time when the economy is in recession and people face deep austerity measures.

STREET PARTIES

Across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, street parties were being held to mark the occasion. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla dropped into one in central London before the pageant, joining in a rousing rendition of the national anthem.

While the queen and the royal party braved the elements under a canopy on a barge in the middle of the Thames and then for hours on a bankside reviewing stand, the wet conditions proved too much for Prime Minister David Cameron, who moved his Downing Street party indoors.

That said, the government hoped the jubilee would mark the start of a summer of revelry capped off by the Olympic Games in London, raising the public's spirits and their poll ratings.

"You wouldn't get that anywhere else in the world - only the British could put on an event like that," said Paul Slater, 30, a financial consultant, who travelled from Birmingham in central England for the pageant. "Bring on the Olympics."

However, economists have warned that the extra public holidays will hit Britain's already ailing economy, potentially prolonging a recession.

The celebrations come as polls show the overwhelming backing for the monarchy, which has overcome a slump in the 1990s following marital infidelities and the death of the hugely popular Princess Diana in a 1997 Paris car crash

However, not everyone in London was cheering as about 100 republicans waving banners demanding "Votes not Boats" and "Make Monarchy History" staged a protest near Tower Bridge.

"Her achievement is just staying alive, doing little and saying less," Graham Smith, head of campaign group Republic, told Reuters.

Even republicans acknowledge though there is little chance the queen will be ousted and take solace in indications many Britons are simply indifferent -- 2 million people are leaving the country to take advantage of the extended public holiday.

Celebrations will continue on Monday with a pop concert outside Elizabeth's London residence Buckingham Palace and conclude with a service of thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral on Tuesday followed by a carriage procession.

Leadership Day - 1 week to go! - Undergraduates - Saltire ...

?

In preparation for our departure, the 2012 scholars benefitted from the first ever Saltire Foundation Leadership Day which took place today.? The day was focussed on getting us thinking about what makes a great leader, how to get the most from our scholarship and how to use what we learn on our scholarship to come back and effectively lead others to self improvement and success. ?

While listening to all the stories and advice given to us throughout the day, I couldn?t help but think about how lucky we were to be in this situation and having these brilliant people share their valuable experience with us.? I am a firm believer that the there is always something to be learned from hearing other people?s experiences; what they did, how they handled the challenges and how they got the most out of it.? I took a lot from today and am now even more excited not just for my internship, but also to get started on some projects when I get home.? One of the workshops was a discussion on how we as Saltire Alumni will be able to use our knowledge and experience to inspire and lead others - there were many great suggestions which I hope will be coming to life after this summer and I can?t wait to get on board.?

Another observation I made today was that I had never before been in such a concentrated group of such genuine, nice people.? I don?t know if it?s to do with the sort of people that apply or whether it?s just that the ladies involved in running the Saltire Foundation are so lovely that they?ve managed to select such a group of pleasant and wonderful scholars.? Everyone seems so warm and welcoming and i?ve never felt such caring and compassion from a group of nearly strangers before.? Before I even set off on my internship, i am already feeling the benefits of the Saltire community.? I feel I have a big new group of friends that will be there to help me out in the future.? So, already, thank you Saltire Foundation for introducing me to this group of wonderful people and accepting me into the Saltire family. ?

On that note, it?s only a week to go until I embark on the summer of a lifetime with the two other scholars, Duncan and Shereen.? The three of us will be interning at the Grand Hyatt in Dubai - an ideal opportunity for me as I am hoping to build my career in the hospitality industry.? As far as I am aware we are going to be moving around different departments of the hotel to see how each area operates and what makes an organisation like Hyatt so successful.? I am very excited about everything we will learn this summer and how I can apply it to my own work. ?

With only six short days left, it?s time to get all the last minute things organized.? I would have thought that I would be all packed and ready to go by now - but packing for this trip has proved a little more difficult than your general journey abroad.? For starters, it?s difficult to know what kind of clothes to pack.? We have been asked to bring smart casual clothes for our first four days of training before we are issued a uniform.? According to the world of google, smart casual means something different in Dubai than it does here - except I can?t seem to find a general opinion on what exactly it does mean.? Clothing for spare time is also problematic, although not a legal requirement as the other Emirate States, conservative dressing is required out of respect as it is a Muslim country.? This means being covered from shoulders to knees at all times when in public.? With that kind of heat, this means a very thorough wardrobe re-think! ? So I would say that is a valid excuse as to why my suitcase is still lying on my bedroom floor - nearly empty. ?

Well I have already rambled on longer than I intended to for a first blog so I will leave it there for now.? But I will be back very shortly to share the experience of my first few days in Dubai!

Analysis: Nasdaq plays tough with clients angry over Facebook

NEW YORK (Reuters) - It's crisis communications 101 for Corporate America: when a company bungles an event as big as the Facebook IPO, alienates customers, and spawns lawsuits and regulatory inquiries, the CEO apologizes and agrees to provide compensation to make things right. Everyone can then move on.

Not so at Nasdaq OMX Group, where technology glitches and a communications breakdown marred Facebook's $16 billion initial public offering on May 18.

Since then, the exchange has done little to conciliate market making clients - a number of which lost tens of millions of dollars each due to the trading problems. There has been no outright apology. And as angry as some customers may be, experts say they have little alternative but to keep trading on the exchange.

And they have. Nasdaq's trading volume this week is above the monthly average, and its share price is nearly unchanged two weeks after the trading glitch.

Nasdaq, one of only two U.S. exchanges on which companies can list their shares, is home to a raft of heavily traded household technology names such as Apple and Google, and has challenged the New York Stock Exchange for marquee listings. The Facebook IPO was seen as a major coup.

With so few options for traders, Nasdaq's strong position is giving confidence to investors and analysts.

"We expect this to blow over with time," said Chris Allen, an analyst at Evercore Partners, in a note to clients.

Many of Nasdaq's customers sing a different tune, however. During the first day of Facebook trading, technical glitches left the market makers - who facilitate trades for brokers and are crucial to the smooth operation of stock trading - in the dark for hours as to which trades had gone through.

The result was up to $115 million in losses for the Nasdaq's top four market makers alone. Two senior executives in the financial industry have said they expect Nasdaq member claims to total $150 million to $200 million.

Nasdaq's response amounted to a members-only call with one of its executive vice presidents, a statement that the exchange would set aside a pool of $13.7 million to accommodate losses, and a brief mention of Facebook during the company's shareholders meeting. Greifeld also hosted Nasdaq's party at a technology conference this week in California.

A source close to the exchange said it is reaching out to affected clients. Yet some big clients are still unhappy.

"Communication has been about as good as it was on the day of the IPO - minimal," said Mark Turner, head of trading at New York-based market maker Instinet.

Turner declined to say how much his firm lost but said it paled in comparison with losses suffered by larger counterparts like UBS, Citigroup, Knight Capital, and Citadel Securities, which lost between $20 million and $35 million.

THROWING OUT THE CRISIS PR PLAYBOOK

In most corners of Corporate America, such a situation would have driven executives into crisis communications overload.

Regular communication, not necessarily more, is the best way to handle a crisis situation, said John McInerney, a global vice president at public relations firm Makovsky and Co.

"Just saying 'we are going to talk to you at 4:00 or at a certain point and we are going to tell you where things are right now,' I think people can live with that kind of uncertainty as long as they know they are going to hear something," he said. "And that didn't happen."

On a call with select reporters the Sunday after the Facebook IPO, Greifeld said Nasdaq was "humbly embarrassed" over the trading glitch, but he stopped short of a public apology.

"They have failed in executing a comprehensive or cohesive communications strategy," said Michael Robinson, a former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission public affairs and policy chief who also spent three years in media relations at Nasdaq.

"Here we are a couple of weeks later and I'm still not entirely sure what it is they said went wrong," said Robinson, who is now an executive vice president at Levick Strategic Communications.

It's a sharp contrast to the way rival exchange BATS Global Markets handled a major crisis - the withdrawal of its own IPO on its own exchange in March after a technological glitch disrupted trading. Joe Ratterman, chief executive of BATS, was on television the next day taking the blame and explaining why the company pulled the plug.

The incident was an embarrassment at the time, but now market participants say BATS' swift response looks like a brilliant move compared with Nasdaq's inaction.

"Although they were highly criticized, guess what, no one lost any money, other than maybe the BATS guys. But ... investors didn't lose," said a financial industry executive who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue.

"MODUS OPERANDI"

A lack of public communication is partly protective - lawsuits against Nasdaq by disgruntled investors are stacking up. But many people who deal with Nasdaq regularly, or are familiar with how it has handled its customer relationships, say even if there were no legal issues, the silence and lack of contrition expressed to market makers is par for the course.

"This is their modus operandi," said independent trading and market structure consultant William Karsh, a former chief operating officer of rival electronic exchange Direct Edge. "They screw the wholesalers because they can. At the end of the day, the wholesalers have no choice but to use them - they are still a huge liquidity pool."

Nasdaq declined to comment for this article.

Nasdaq's liabilities for a trading glitch are limited through regulation and a contract with its customers to $3 million per month. The exchange has applied to the SEC to increase the amount to $13.7 million to include a gain of $10.7 million it made from the Facebook IPO through the sale of shares it was left holding due to the technology glitches.

"They are certainly facing the specter of some significant lawsuits if this pool is not enough," said an attorney who is familiar with the situation.

The customers are arguing that the limit on liabilities should not apply because the Facebook problems were the result of gross negligence.

While its trading customers have little option but to stick with Nasdaq to do their business, the longer-term risk for the exchange is not landing the next Facebook.

"The Nasdaq has just handed the New York Stock Exchange the best marketing bonanza they could ever hope for," said Robinson.

In collaboration, UCI's Elliot Botvinick and UCLA's Gerry Weinmaster published online in the journal Developmental Cell complementary studies in which they each used optical tweezers to detect and measure the mechanical force produced by cells when bound to Notch, a cellular pathway that ensures the correct cell types form at a precise time and location in the body.

"The Notch network is used repeatedly during the development of almost every cell type and must be tightly controlled, as inappropriate communication causes developmental defects and cancer," said Weinmaster, a professor of biological chemistry and researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Successful design and generation of Notch therapeutics demands a solid understanding of the basic mechanics of the Notch network."

"Optical tweezers act as tiny tractor beams that can hold and manipulate microscopic beads coated with specific molecules," said Botvinick, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering and surgery affiliated with the Beckman Laser Institute and The Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology at UCI. "When cells bind to and pull on the beads, researchers can measure cell-generated forces that are billions of times smaller than the weight of one teaspoon of sugar."

Using this technology, the UCI-UCLA team found that communication via the Notch network involves a sort of tug-of-war between neighboring cells in which Notch molecules are unraveled by force to reveal hidden elements important for cell-to-cell communication.

Together with biochemical and biological cell analyses, their findings provide compelling evidence that pulling on Notch opens a network to deliver instructions for specific cellular responses.

The research sheds new light on the role of cells' neighbors in the development and regulation of tissue and advances efforts to create new therapeutics.

Bhupinder Shergill of UCI and Laurence Meloty-Kapella, Abdiwahab Musse and Jane Kuon of UCLA contributed to the studies.

Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller's Pittsburgh gang just got a little bit bigger.

On Friday (June 1), independent label Rostrum Records announced that they've signed Boaz, a bubbling MC from the 'Burgh who has made his mark with a number of street-hardened mixtapes. And this summer, Boaz will join his new labelmates onstage for the Under the Influence of Music Tour.

"I'm very excited that Boaz is joining the Rostrum family," label president Benjy Grinberg said in a press release issued to MTV News on Friday. "I have been a big fan of Bo and his music for many years, and I'm looking forward to working with him in a more substantial way."

"It wasn't a decision that was very hard for me given their track record of developing talented learned musicians into great artists," Bo added in the release. "I've known the folks over there [at Rostrum] for some time and I think it is a good fit for both parties!"

Rostrum took a teenage and then-unknown Wiz and helped build him up through the mixtape and live-show circuits for several years before releasing his gold-selling, major-label debut, Rolling Papers, last year, cementing him as one of hip-hop's brightest stars. With regard to Mac Miller, Grinberg and his Rostrum team have taken the independent route, choosing to grow Mac without the help of a major label. All of the hard work paid off when Miller's Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart when it was released back in November.

Boaz, however, brings something distinctly different to the Rostrum mix. "I just bring that underground feel," Bo told MTV News in December, describing his deeply rooted street sound. "I embrace the culture of that poverty line that I'm speaking about."

Bo's last mixtape, The Transition, released in May 2011, featured guest appearances from Mac Miller, Jay Rock and GLC and received critical acclaim among rap's underground. Next, Boaz will drop a free Internet-based project titled Bases Loaded; expect it early this summer.
