Lithuanians vote for a new Parliament

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) ? Lithuanians voted Sunday in a parliamentary election that could determine whether the small East European nation continues tough austerity measures in an effort to join the eurozone.

Two center-left opposition parties ? Labor and the Social Democrats ? have pledged to form a new coalition government together with another opposition party, promising to end the current government's budget cuts and increase social spending.

Labor finished first in the earlier opening round of the parliamentary election and the Social Democrats second.

The Social Democrats also have said that Lithuania should postpone introducing the euro until the European Union can sort out its three-year economic crisis.

But the center-right government of Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius' Homeland Union-Christian Democrats could pull off an upset.

"It seems the likeliest option is that the three parties will end up with a similar number of seats, so coalition talks are likely to be quite long," Kubilius told reporters after voting Sunday.

His government began in 2008 at the start of Europe's financial crisis and was the first in Lithuania to complete an entire four-year term since the nation became independent of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The government has won praise for averting bankruptcy and returning the economy to growth. Kubilius has vowed to introduce the euro in 2014, though the economy may fail to meet criteria on inflation and deficit spending.

Plans for a nuclear power plant are another highly contested issue in the country of 3 million people. The government wants to build a new facility to replace a Soviet-era nuclear plant closed in 2009, but the opposition says the project is too expensive and possibly unsafe.

Nearly half of Parliament's 141 seats are at stake in Sunday's vote, which was taking place two weeks after the first round failed to produce a clear favorite.

?How Can I Enjoy Being Single When I'm Obsessed With Marriage ...

Editor?s note: Have a dating/sex/relationships conundrum?Email us at thedatereport at howaboutwe.com or?fill out this anonymous form, and one of our experts will help you solve it.

I?m 21 years old and obsessed with marriage.? I size someone up on a first date and start wondering if they are marriage material.? If a guy even gives me his number I start wondering if he is marriage material.? I know this probably?isn?t?healthy.? How can I just enjoy being single and go on dates without obsessing about marriage?

If every guy who gave his number to a girl was seriously considering marriage then we?d have to all move to Utah and practice polygamy.? Joking aside, it isn?t in your best interest to be thinking about marriage before you even get to know the person.? It?s fine if you want marriage in your future ? that?s respectable and healthy ? but not so healthy to be ?obsessed? with it.

Plus:?5 Perfectly Good Reasons You Might Be Single

Society has led us to believe that we are supposed to be married and have the proverbial 2.1 kids.

See this time in your life as an opportunity to meet lots of people and learn more about the type of guy you?d ultimately want to settle down with and marry. What qualities and values would he have?? What are his interests and goals?? More importantly, are they in line with yours?? This is an important time in your life for self-development.? Get to know what makes you tick and what you stand for.? Failure to do so and jumping into marriage could lead you to feel unfulfilled and to experience marital troubles down the road.? Way too often I see couples in my practice who rushed into marriage and shortly thereafter problems arose.

Plus:?The Best (Most Reassuring) Thing You Will Read About Finding A Soul Mate

Society has led us to believe that we are supposed to be married and have the proverbial 2.1 kids.? This message is supported by cultural norms and expectations and can have quite the impact on people as they get out there and date. Take a step back and ask yourself: what?s wrong with being single at the age of 21? Once you?re okay with this, you?ll be able to go out there and enjoy being single, take things one date at a time and develop a healthy relationship with a marriage-minded beau.

HR SaaS: Kicking the Business Case Tires | Consider the Source

Stanton JonesGiven the overwhelming interest in HR SaaS platforms like Workday, Oracle Taleo, SAP SuccessFactors and a plethora of others, we thought we?d share with you what we?re seeing as we?re working closely with both clients and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers. More specifically, what we?re seeing in terms of the ?dissonance? created by a turbo-charged SaaS market matched up with soaring client expectations around the financial benefits of SaaS.

In general, the market has three financial assumptions before the SaaS business case is even created:

  1. It will be cheaper to implement
  2. It will be cheaper to run
  3. I?ll only have to pay for what I use

We?re finding that one or more of these are not always true. Here?s why:

Implementation costs are not always less, especially when a client is already sourced

Although the implementation of SaaS platforms for human resources (HR) can typically be completed much faster given the lack of customization, the overall implementation cost is not always significantly cheaper. There are a number of factors that can affect this cost, including the client?s current hosting environment, ability to sunset existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) and hosting environments, the number of interfaces, and ? importantly ? the available resources from the client to assist in the configuration of the service. In an environment where the client has already sourced, the retained organization may not have these skills, so they need to be purchased from the SaaS provider or a systems integrator ? which can significantly increase the implementation cost.

Financial terms are usually heavily weighted to the supplier

Many SaaS providers will expect a client to prepay a significant portion of the total contract value at the start of the implementation. Given that the starting point is usually a three-year term, this can be quite a significant sum. In addition, terms generally cannot be canceled and subscription fees cannot be reduced over the course of the term for volume reductions. We?re also seeing some suppliers opening with an increase to subscription fees over the term of the agreement as functionality expands.

The business case needs to cover a long enough period to avoid at least one upgrade

In general, clients should not expect a significant savings when comparing monthly subscription fees for SaaS to the all-in cost of traditional ERP, which includes the amortized license cost, the software maintenance fees and the hosting and support costs. In fact, we?re finding that when looking at a short-term business case (say three years) where an upgrade may not occur in a traditional model, the SaaS model may actually be slightly more expensive. The real savings with SaaS comes in avoiding upgrades, which means the business case needs to extend over a long enough period to account for at least one upgrade, and that could mean at least five to seven years. Looking at this length of time, the SaaS model becomes significantly better due to the avoidance of a large-scale upgrade.

Don?t forget about the impact to the income statement and the balance sheet

Unlike a traditional ERP model where the client typically procures the licenses and hardware up front and depreciates that cost over the useful life of the asset, SaaS monthly subscription fees are expensed as incurred. Depending on how the client looks at the business case (P&L versus cash), this accounting treatment change, coupled with the size of the investment, can have a significant impact on the financials.

If you?ve worked through a HR SaaS deal as a client or as a provider, we?d like to hear your feedback ? agree or disagree?

Search is on for lost cat at JFK's Terminal 4

1 day

Remember Jack the Cat?

The former stray made headlines and more than 24,000 Facebook friends?last year after escaping from a pet carrier in Terminal 4 at New York?s John F.?Kennedy International?Airport that was bound for an American Airlines flight to California. Two months later, Jack fell through a ceiling panel in a customs area in JFK?s Terminal 8. But by then he was so ill that, despite extensive veterinary care, he was euthanized 12 days later.

Now another cat has escaped at JFK, and the cat lovers at Where is Jack, Inc. --?the non-profit formed to honor?Jack?s legacy -- are concerned that neither the airline involved,?China Airlines,?nor officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey?are actively searching for the pet or giving her owners adequate information.?

On Thursday, four-year old Xiaohwa (the cat?s name means "little flower" in Chinese) was being checked in for China Airlines Flight 19 to Taiwan by a friend bringing the cat to its owner. But Xiaohwa bolted when the traveler removed her so security officers could inspect the pet carrier.

"We called Terminal 4 to ask people to look around," a China Airlines employee told NBC News after the passenger reported the cat had escaped. "That's all we could do," the spokesperson said, as the passenger didn't have a picture of the animal.

Xiaohwa has been missing since Thursday. Her owner, Iris Yu, says she?s having a hard time finding out what is being done to find her pet.

?I am so worried and wondering where she is,? Yu told NBC News from her home in Taiwan. ?I have been calling the Port?Authority?and the airline every day trying to ask for details about the search, but they just tell me to wait.? Yu moved to Taiwan 10 months ago and paid $120 for a ticket for the cat to travel with her friend as excess baggage. She spent hundreds of?dollars more for documents, health exams and other travel preparations for the cat.

Yu?s boyfriend, Jerry Cheung, lives in Brooklyn and has also been trying to get information about the cat?s whereabouts.??After the incident we were told it?s the airline?s responsibility but the airline?s phone just kept on ringing with no answer for several days,? he said.

The Port Authority told Cheung it would put out some small animal traps with food and "wait it out."

?This is what they did with Jack and it didn?t work,? said Mary Beth Melchior, founder of Where is Jack, Inc., which has offered the airport help for active searches of lost pets. ?Passive searches for lost cats rarely, if ever, result in finding the animal in a timely manner that allows the animal to remain healthy,? she told NBC News.

Although Xiaohwa has a microchip and has a history of being street savvy, she may have already used several of her nine lives. Yu and Chueng adopted the cat after seeing and feeding her for two years on the streets in their neighborhood. They took her in when she was sick and pregnant and nursed her back to health despite a veterinarian?s suggestion that the animal be euthanized.

In September, the Port Authority approved plans for construction of a $32 million?animal handling facility at JFK that will handle up to 70,000 domestic and wild animals annually and ?set new national airport standards for comprehensive veterinary, kenneling and quarantine services.?

Website Marketing: Tips For Unlocking Your Company's Potential ...

Do not think you are the only company owner that wants their business to grow and their profits to reach new levels of success. Then get ready to embrace the low-cost, cutting-edge world of internet promotion. Web marketing is a fast paced, easy way to promote sales through advertisements that people will see on their computers. Read the information below to see how this marketing technique can start bringing you results.

Keep a close eye on the online discussions pertaining to your brand, and incorporate the vocabulary utilized in those conversations into your own marketing strategies. They will feel more comfortable reading things they are familiar with. If you use the right verbiage, it?s much easier to connect with your audience.

Placing user polls next to any content in your website will show your customers how the majority feels about it. This fills your website with engaging content that makes readers feel welcome.

Prepare yourself for any questions you may be asked. Visitors come to your site because they want to know more, and if you are not willing to provide the answers to their questions, they will not stay with you. Providing them with detailed facts has the immediate benefit of satisfying their curiosity, which engenders trust, which leads to sales.

Look into advertising at the start of your marketing plan for your online business. It is always worth your time and money to invest in advertising. This will assist you in building up your business with some customers whom you might never contact otherwise.

You can assess the results of online marketing campaigns with sophisticated programs that measure the sales versus the number of visitors to your site. There are a variety of online tools that you can use to analyze your success.

When you set up your website, be sure there is a section for customer comments. Most visitors will enjoy reading what other people have gathered from their experience with your product. Comments show that your site is honest and trustworthy and makes your customers feel comfortable purchasing from you.

Put your site in a format that is more user friendly. The last thing you want on your website are hard to find links and lack of usability for your audience.

Never simply give up on an approach if it does not immediately produce the desired results. Something that did not catch on a few months ago might work now. As the nature of the Internet evolves, users will always be looking for new ways to do business and explore online. While you shouldn?t invest in failed ideas, hang on to them for the future.

With Web marketing, as with traditional marketing, it is important to use a variety of methods if you want success. You can give yourself time to grow your business to the point where it can provide you with a regular income. Until you are able to see steady profits, make sure you keep your day job.

Try offering a $1 sales promotion for new customers to snag new clients. You create a great buzz and promote strong traffic, and it boosts your product?s exposure. This can also help you sell other products because most people will come for the bargain and add other products as well. Stay confident and believe in your product!

Try using ad banners on your site that don?t actually look like a banner. You should try your best to make them look like they are clickable links to reach more content. When people recognize a banner for what it is, they are reluctant to click on it.

If you are good at writing, write some articles containing your business information to submit to websites and magazines that accept submissions of articles. It is important to include your website information and business information in any article you write. Get the attention of the editors by offering affiliate commissions or freebies so that there is a good incentive for them to publish what you write.

The address of your company?s website should be something that?s easy for people to remember. Try and incorporate your business? name within the URL of your website. Keep your website address simple so that searchers can easily remember how to get to your site.

Use your advertising campaign to make a personal connection with your potential customers. You can put a photo of yourself online and refer to yourself by name in advertisements. A nice, handwritten note that welcomes people to your site is a nice touch.

A little sizzle in your website design can be good, but don?t overwhelm your readers with fancy tricks. Studies show that once someone clicks on a website, they decide whether to stay or click away within five seconds. You have that amount of time to engage viewers. If they have found nothing to hold their interest in that time, then they will leave your site to browse elsewhere.

Successful Internet marketers are enthusiastic about what it is they?re trying to do. Make sure you communicate your confidence in your products. By showing enthusiasm you will help your customers become more enthusiastic for your product. This should generate lots of sales and profits for you.

One powerful Internet marketing strategy you can use is to reward the visitors and customers that come by your site often and make frequent purchases. It is extremely valuable to hold on to the customers that you already have, and your outward generosity will speak volumes about your company. People are generally more than happy to share their great experiences with others, and this can really pay off for you.

If done right, an Internet marketing campaign will create the need for more Internet marketing. It sounds odd, but what you are doing is driving customers to your site to purchase your products, and that job is never done.

Interviews from people high up in your industry can hold a lot of value. Remember to get formal, written permission to publish your interview if you want to avoid any legal hassles. Convert interviews into simple articles, then submit them to directories on E-zine. This can boost your traffic and help you gain credibility.

One good tip for Online marketing is to have an awareness of your competition. Have a look at your competition and see what they are showing on their websites. Also, you can gauge the amount of visitors they get, which lets you evaluate how well their site is performing.

These tips will give your business a boost in profits and productivity. Website marketing is a very powerful tool to promote a business. These tips will easily make the customers flock to you.

The Internet can be a difficult place for small businessmen to compete. There are a couple things you can do to try and stay ahead of the game. You should re-price your items often to stay competitive with others in the same niche. Another method is to consolidate all your offers into a one-stop shopping resource so that your potential customers can view your items without going all over the web.

Study: Male beluga whale mimics human speech

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? It could be the muffled sound of singing in the shower or that sing-songy indecipherable voice from the Muppets' Swedish Chef.

Surprisingly, scientists said the audio they captured was a whale imitating people. In fact, the whale song sounded so eerily human that divers initially thought it was a human voice.

Handlers at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego heard mumbling in 1984 coming from a tank containing whales and dolphins that sounded like two people chatting far away.

It wasn't until one day, after a diver surfaced from the tank and asked, "Who told me to get out?" did researchers realize the garble came from a captive male Beluga whale. For several years, they recorded its spontaneous sounds while it was underwater and when it surfaced.

An acoustic analysis revealed the human-like sounds were several octaves lower than typical whale calls. The research was published online Monday in Current Biology.

Scientists think the whale's close proximity to people allowed it to listen to and mimic human conversation. It did so by changing the pressure in its nasal cavities. After four years of copying people, it went back to sounding like a whale, emitting high-pitched noises. It died five years ago.

Dolphins and parrots have been taught to mimic the patterns of human speech, but it's rare for an animal to do it spontaneously.

The study is not the first time a whale has sounded human. Scientists who have studied sounds of white whales in the wild sometimes heard what sounded like shouting children. Caretakers at the Vancouver Aquarium in Canada previously said they heard one of the white whales say its name.

Microsoft gives peek at new Windows, tablet

SHANGHAI: U.S. computing giant Microsoft on Tuesday gave the key Chinese market an early peek at its new tablet computer and Windows 8 software, promising a "fast and fluid" operating system.

Microsoft will launch Windows 8 and the Surface tablet computer, designed to compete with Apple's popular iPad, in the United States on Friday. The launch of the two products in China is the same day.

Windows remains the dominant platform for personal computers, but it has lost ground to Apple and Google in newer devices which use rival operating systems.

"With Windows 8, we introduced this fast and fluid experience that works across a broad range of different types of PCs (personal computers)," said Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows division.

"Windows 8 seamlessly moves between a world of touch-only tablets to laptops that have touch screens to desktops and to portable computers without touch screens," he said in a speech to the media in Shanghai.

Microsoft's new tablet computer was designed to be a platform for Windows, Sinofsky said, as he compared the challenger to Apple's iPad.

"Even though it's bigger than an iPad, it's actually lighter in your hand because of the way the physics of the design work," he said.

The Surface has a full-sized USB port unlike the iPad, a built-in stand and a cover which doubles as a keyboard, he said.

It runs the new Windows RT, a form of Windows 8, and comes with Microsoft Office 2013.

It is not Microsoft's first foray into the tablet market. In 2000 the company unveiled a prototype tablet PC and shortly afterwards began licensing its specifications to various manufacturers.

An analyst said Microsoft's tablet would battle for market share in China, which has the world's largest number of Internet users at more than 500 million.

"It doesn't have a price advantage over the iPad, so consumers who can afford a tablet may still be inclined to choose Apple's iPad," said Gerry Xu, of global information company IHS.

Some who have tested Windows 8 complain about the change from earlier versions of Windows, which could force users to relearn how to operate their computers, the New York Times reported Sunday.

Sinofsky acknowledged the difference with older versions but said Windows 8 was designed for the "modern world".

"It's a completely different feel. It's clean. It's beautiful. It's intuitive," he said.

Sinofsky said Microsoft hoped to add up to a billion new customers with Windows 8, which aims to replace earlier versions of its dominant operating system.

"It's (Windows) used by over a billion people around the world and with Widows 8 we're aiming towards the next billion," he said.

Microsoft has been hurt by piracy in China. Industry group the Business Software Alliance last estimated in 2008 that 80 percent of software used in China was pirated.

Ralph Haupter, Microsoft's chairman and chief executive officer for the Greater China Region, said the mainland was an important market.

"China is a big business opportunity for us. China is also the place where many devices get developed, designed, built, but these days, even more importantly, get sold," he told reporters.

A company spokesman said Microsoft does not release sales and revenue figures for China alone.

Why winning?or losing?a nail-biter would be historic for Obama

As the last debate approaches, the specter that haunted me a while back still hovers over this campaign: the possibility that we may be faced on Election Night with two, three, many Floridas. I now imagine both parties deploying AWACS filled with lawyers and organizers, circling the country, parachuting forces into New Hampshire, Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa and Colorado as state after state deadlocks on Election Night.

Whether or not this nightmare comes true?and I devoutly hope it does not?this campaign has already earned its place in the annals of the unusual. An incumbent president facing a very close election is overwhelmingly the exception, rather than the rule.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, only three incumbents have won close elections.

Woodrow Wilson in 1916 won a 3-percentage-point popular vote margin, but it was California?s 13 electoral votes that gave him the White House?votes he won with a 3,700-vote plurality.

Harry Truman?s 1948 upset was won with about a 4.5-point popular vote plurality, but it was his remarkably close victories in Ohio, Illinois and California?each won by well under 1 percent of the vote?that put him back in the White House.

George W. Bush won in 2004 by about 2.5 points, and a similar margin in Ohio gave him his second term. A 60,000 vote switch there would have produced the second straight election where the national popular vote winner was denied the presidency.

If the Romney campaign takes heart from the infrequency of a close incumbent victory, it should consider the other side of the coin. Only one incumbent has lost a close contest: Gerald Ford in 1976, who lost nationally by 2 points, but who would have won with a shift of some 14,000 votes in Ohio and Mississippi.

These elections are clear departures from the norm, where an incumbent wins either comfortably or overwhelmingly (Theodore Roosevelt, FDR, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton) or loses in similar fashion (Taft, Hoover, Carter, George H.W. Bush).

There is, of course, the possibility that the ground will shift in the last two weeks. A decisive debate performance, a late revelation, a sudden, seismic event at home or abroad could turn this cliffhanger into a rout.

As of now, though, 2012 looks as if it?s about to join that foursome of elections, one that will require gallons of caffeine on Election Night and the next morning before we learn whether the moving vans will be called to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The 90s strike back! Marvel VS Capcom Origins Review | Video ...

Ever since the console release of Capcom?s Street Fighter 4 in 2009 2d fighters are enjoying a good degree of popularity once again. Trying to ride the success of Marvel VS Capcom 3 and the Marvel Avengers movie, Capcom releases on PSN and XBLA a new collection called Marvel VS Capcom Origins, cointaining two 90s two dimensions fighters: Marvel Super Heroes and the first Marvel VS Capcom.
Do these two games still hold their own after all these years or will Capcom?s collection only attract nostalgics? Let?s find out.

Nostalgia calling

To be completely honest, I can?t really understand why these two games have been choosen for the collection.
The Marvel VS Capcom franchise main feature is the tag team mechanic, where each player chooses 2 or more fighters, can swap them anytime during battle and even unleash some devasting combination attacks; Marvel Super Heroes features the standard 1 vs 1 formula without any tag team option
It?s not like it?s a bad game, but I think including X Men VS Street Fighter or Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter too would have been more appropriate, since they are the first steps of the VS franchise and, nostalgia wise, it would have been a better choice altogether.
And nostalgia definitely is one of the main selling points of this collection and Capcom didn?t even try to hide it!
The Games are identical to their 90s counterparts in every possible way: graphics wise, sound wise and gameplay wise these two games are a trip back in the 90s, when these big detailed sprites dominated arcade cabinets.
To improve the nostalgic feeling of the collection, Capcom added 2 video options, one to simulate old CRT televisions and another to slight distort the image, simulating an old arcade cabinet screen.
These options will probably be fun for a couple minutes and most players will revert to the regular video option after some time.
Gameplay wise, how do the two fighters hold up? Quite frankly, they?re still very fun, despite their shortcomings.

Avengers, Assemble!

As I mentioned before Marvel Super Heroes, the second Capcom fighter featuring Marvel comics heroes, sports a traditonal 1 versus 1 gameplay, where players can unleash special attacks through the usual 2d fighters stick motions and even more devastating attacks called Infinity Combo after charging a special meter bar placed at the bottom of the screen. The fighters roster is quite diverse and feautures many fans? favourites like Captain America, Spiderman, Iron Man, Wolverine, Wolverine and Cyclops and a few villains like Blackheart, Shuma Gorath and Doctor DoomGameplay is enriched by the presence of special gems called Infinity Gems which grant some bonuses for a short amount of time during the fight.Graphics and sound wise we get what we could expect from a 90s 2d fighting game: sprites and backgrounds are nicely detailed and animated and the soundtrack manages to do its job, although some of the tracks sound a bit repetitive.

When two different worlds collide

Marvel VS Capcom: Clash Of The Super Heroes, released in 1998, is a turning point of the franchise: with this game Capcom started to expand the roster way beyond the Street Fighters characters including characters from other Capcom games like Darkstalker, Megaman, Strider and Captain Command. The Marvel roster gets expanded too with the inclusion of Spiderman?s nemesis Venom and a mix of characters already present in Marvel Super Heroes and XMen Vs Street Fighters.
Gameplay wise Capcom refined the tag team formula: players will choose two characters to use in combat and will be able to switch them at will during play. Nice additions are the Duo Team Attacks which allow the player to use both characters at the same time for a brief time with unlimited super moves usage and the Assist Characters which can be summoned for a limited amount of time to assist the player. These characters aren?t normaly usable so it feels like each time is composed by 3 characters, a prelude to the future evolution of the series.
Graphics wise we?re not too far from the other game in the collection except for a bit more details in both characters and backgrounds. The same can be said about soundtrack: it does its job well but there?s hardly anything memorable.

Now it?s time to take them on!

The only modern touch in the collection is, obviuosly, the online multiplayer mode. The online infrastructure is really well done: I experienced very little lag playing with people all over Europe and even when playing with someone far I didn?t experience too many problems.
The main issue with playing online comes from some unbalancing problems of the games: people playing online will try to win at any cost, so you?ll probably costantly fight the powered up versions of Hulk, Iron Man and Venom.
Not being technical fighters, the charm of these games lies in the easy to pick up and play nature and the unbalanced roster but with competitive play this may become an issue.
Final Verdict

I used to play these games when they were released and I had fun playing them again, probably as much as I did back then thanks to online play; nostalgia has probably a lot to do with this.
Players who never played these games in the past are probably better off looking elsewhere since some others 2d fighters are more refinite with more modern and compelling mechanics. Nostalgics like myself are probably going to really enjoying themselves, remembering those times where reading ? Insert Coins? on the arcade cabinets screens made them full of excitement!

The game is available on both PSN (12,99 euros) and XBox Live Arcade (1200 Microsoft points)

The Man with the Golden Gun - Bond 50 Box Set Blu-ray Review ...

?An assassin that?s second to none...?

Keen on avoiding any further stop-start frustrations after the Connery-Lazenby-Connery-Moore seat-changing dance which had been played out over the last four movies, the Studios had contracted Roger Moore for three movies right from the outset. However, despite a mixed response on his first outing ? Live and Let Die ? they were easily convinced that he was the right choice for the job by the overwhelming Box Office success of his first outing, and so pressed on with a follow-up, fast-tracking it to be released the following year (the last time two Bond movies would be released in consecutive years). The Man with the Golden Gun was originally conceived as Moore?s introduction to the role, back when his commitments to The Saint and The...

Picture

Roger Moore?s sophomore Bond outing, The Man with the Golden Gun, hits UK Region Free Blu-ray as part of the Bond 50 Box Set having already been released some time back as a standalone title. Although, like its predecessor Live and Let Die, it has undergone ?pristine digital restoration? at the hands of Lowry, this time around it does not appear to have quite had the desired effect. Whilst a decent looking presentation ? arguably the best the movie has looked in years (if ever), the DNR application seems marginally more intrusive than one would have ideally liked, and edge enhancement in noticeable in some sequences. Aside from these niggles, and the issues inherent to the budget and age of the movie itself, it?s an otherwise decent presentation ? just not one that could be championed as a superior, demo-quality remastered restoration.

Complete with a 1080p/MPEG-4 AVC High Definition video encode in the movie?s original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 widescreen (the last of the Bonds to use this scope, returning to the wider format which had briefly been implemented for the later Connery outings), The Man with the Golden Gun offers up decent detail, fluctuating somewhere between impressively excellent close-up shots (not least of faces, but also of clothing weaves and textures) and some softer wider shots which, whilst forgivable, don?t always do the movie?s stunning locations justice. There is a decent sheen of suitably cinematic grain, which leaves you believing that any DNR application on the part of Lowry has been minimalised, but there are still a few brief moments where edge enhancement is visible. Defects and print damage are basically non-existent.

The colour scheme is strong and vibrant, with generally much warmer, more vivid tones on offer than was the case for Live and Let Die ? the locations no doubt helped, as well as the more ?colourful? plot. Skin tones are rich and healthy (even Christopher Lee?s fake tan!) and everything from the deep blue sea to the lush green island plant-life looks gorgeous. Black levels are strong, and there?s no sign of any crush, with the darker sequences retaining a satisfying amount of shadow detail. Overall it?s a good presentation, just not at all demo quality, and not really what you?d expect considering the better job that has been done for some of the other titles that have underwent a similar ?restoration?.

Picture score : 7

Sound

On the aural front, the accompanying DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 re-mix is also decent but also unexceptional. Dialogue comes across clearly and coherently, largely dominating the frontal array whenever necessary, and never getting overwhelmed by either the score or the effects. The surrounds get a reasonable workout from some of the set-pieces, but this is a slightly less action-packed Bond outing, and so there isn?t quite as much material to play with. The car and boat chases are high points, as is the explosive final confrontation. Gunshots ring out, but occasionally sound a little hollow, and otherwise we?re left with more ambient observations to round out the atmospherics, and, in this respect, the track isn?t all that impressive.

Certainly we could have done with more rear support, even just channelling a portion of the frontal array?s output, and separation across the channels is often non-existent, indicative of an underwhelming aural remix, as the original mono offering would, of course, have had no distinct channel separation and soundscape imaging. The LFE input is sporadic ? there could have been more ? and the score, which is used basically throughout the piece in one form or another, gets arguably the most prominence on the track, which is no bad thing. Whilst not a fine-tuned track which has been remastered to perfection, and whilst being far from demo material, this is a perfectly serviceable accompaniment to the main feature, and probably still sounds a great deal better than the movie has ever sounded before.

Sound score : 6

Extras

This new Bond 50 Box Set comes complete with all of the old Ultimate Edition DVD extras ported over (as well as some new material on a further disc in the set). Far from bad news, the old UE releases pretty-much offered up definitive background material for each title, and The Man with the Golden Gun was certainly one of the chapters that was particularly well treated.

Sporting no less than three separate Commentaries ? one by the Cast and Crew, one by the Screenwriter, and one by Bond star Sir. Roger Moore himself ? we also had a number of informative background Featurettes and Documentaries, as well as a hefty amount of promotional material (which, with the majority of these older releases, was the only place you could spot the Deleted Scenes). Fans of the film will no doubt know all about these offerings; newcomers couldn?t want for more.

Verdict

?Ours is the loneliest profession, Mr. Bond.?

With an original novel which told a tale of a brainwashed Bond programmed by the Russians to kill M, finally recovering only to be dispatched on one last mission ? to kill the world?s greatest assassin ? there were plenty of great ideas which could have made the film adaptation one of the absolute best Bond outings. Unfortunately, then-topical energy crisis issues; the influence of then-suddenly-popular martial arts movies; and a somewhat misguided approach towards the tone and comedy of the piece left The Man with the Golden Gun one of the weaker entries, with large stretches of the movie utterly devoid of consequence, and the remaining good bits often damaged by the presence of some truly bad characters. Whilst Christopher Lee?s eponymous villain would be a great scene-stealer, Britt Ekland?s cute-but-utterly-vapid Bond girl would cause much of the destruction herself, and Roger Moore ? still on good form ? would be limited by pressure to act more like Connery?s Bond. Still, the movie would be book-ended by great little assassin-versus-assassin sequences and a few fun moments in-between. It?s just a shame because it could have been so much more.

As part of the Bond 50 set, The Man with the Golden Gun comes with another one of those Lowry restorations. Unfortunately, unlike some of the previous entries ? including the last title, Live and Let Die ? the results here would not be anywhere near as impressive. Even more disappointing, the audio would be a lacklustre, hollow accompaniment. Still, it?s a considerable step up from DVD and fans will be pleased that all of the old Ultimate Edition DVD extras have been ported over here.

Bond has been served well by a phenomenal box-set, timed to coincide with the arrival of Skyfall and the 50th Anniversary of the franchise. The Man with the Golden Gun forms part of the set along with the other twenty-two films in the series, the majority of which look and sound terrific, and contain a wealth of extra material as well as a separate and new disc full of extra features further examining our favourite super-spy. It comes with the highest recommendation.

Overall score : 7

Romney Derides Obama's 'Incredible Shrinking Campaign'

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - With just 18 days to go before Election Day, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan rallied a crowd of more than 8,000 at the Daytona Beach Bandshell, with the GOP presidential nominee calling the president's re-election effort "the incredible shrinking campaign."

"They've been reduced to petty attacks and silly word games," Romney said in front of one of the largest crowds of his campaign. "Just watch it. The Obama campaign has become the incredible shrinking campaign. This is a big country with big opportunities and great challenges, and they keep on talking about smaller and smaller things. We have big ideas, bold ideas, a strong agenda. We're going to get America working again and that's why you're going to help elect the two of us. We're going to go to Washington and get this country on track."

Country music singer John Rich warmed up the rowdy crowd, which also had a large contingent of bikers for Daytona's Biketoberfest weekend, a festival for motorcycle enthusiasts.

Rep. Ryan, R-Wis., noted them in the crowd.

"I just came in on town and I saw a lot of our Milwaukee-made Harleys running all around town here," Ryan said.

Romney asked the crowd if it had "been watching the Obama campaign lately?" adding, "it's absolutely remarkable."

"They have absolutely no agenda for the future," Romney said, as protesters could be heard chanting in the distance. "No agenda for America. No agenda for a second term. It's a good thing they won't have a second term."

A new CNN/ORC poll out Friday had the race in Florida in a dead heat, with Romney at 49 percent and Obama at 48 percent. The event wrapped up a two-day swing in the state for Ryan.

Romney will spend the weekend in South Florida. He will be in Delray Beach, Fla., preparing to debate President Obama on Monday in Boca Raton, Fla.

Repurpose a Produce Rubber Band Into an iPhone Grip

Repurpose a Produce Rubber Band Into an iPhone GripSure you may prefer your iPhone to be naked and avoid gaudy covers but you might like having a bit more grip than the surfaces of the iPhone normally provide. Instructables user timwikander advises that you can stretch a standard grocery store produce rubber band over your iPhone to make a grippy surface along the sides that doesn't impede the factory form of your iPhone.

Of course you won't have access to your phone's ports but since the rubber band isn't too difficult to take off and reapply this would work fine for most users. You can also try using a small drill bit to make a tiny hole for your headphones or several tiny holes for your dock connector. If you have trouble finding this kind of rubber band just buy a head of broccoli. I'm sure you can also get this to work with other similarly-shaped phones as well.

Family of six homeless after house fire; says it's suspicious | Top ...

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A family of six is left homeless after fire destroyed its house.

The quick moving fire ripped through the house on Rockford Road around noon Thursday.

Syrilda Welch was at work when she got the call Thursday afternoon about her house.

"That the house was on fire and it's gone," Syrilda said.

Syrilda rushed home to find it in flames. Her family of six lives at the home, including her elderly father, long-time boyfriend, two children and an infant.

Investigators are looking into what started the fire. The family tells Action News it's possible someone else was at the house and could be responsible.

Crews were quick to the scene, but say it was too late to save the structure.

"It appears that fire had gotten its start and moved rather quickly before it was noticed," said East Valley Fire Acting Chief Michael Riel.

Leonard Kimbel is Syrilda's boyfriend. He says the fire comes during a rough time for the family.

"We moved in here a year ago to help her mom that was dying and now we're here to take care of her dad," Leonard said.

Family and friends showed up to the comfort the family that might have lose everything.

"I don't believe there's any insurance, I'm hoping we can figure out how we're gonna do it. You know, we'll struggle. Both of us work hard and we'll keep going from there," Leonard said.

"It's just devastation I guess. Starting over," Syrilda said.

A family grateful to be alive, but forced to start over with next to nothing.

Tennessee clinic linked to meningitis scare closed after outbreak

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - The Tennessee clinic that received more potentially tainted steroid than any facility in the nation has been closed temporarily as it struggles to cope with an avalanche of patient calls about the deadly meningitis outbreak, its administrator said.

The Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center in Nashville received 2,000 vials of the steroid from a Massachusetts company. The drug was shipped to 76 facilities in 23 states.

Twenty people have died, including three at the hospital where the clinic is located, and 254 contracted fungal meningitis traced to vials from New England Compounding Center used mainly for epidural injections to ease back pain.

Tennessee has more confirmed cases than any other state. The Nashville clinic was one of the first to notice its patients were suffering from severe headaches and other symptoms.

The clinic, which administered about 5,000 epidural injections a year for back pain, closed on September 20 and has not reopened.

"We started out with 300 phone calls a day and now we are getting 40 or 50. As long as these phone calls are coming in, we are not comfortable to be open," Scott Butler, administrator of the clinic, said in an interview on Wednesday.

"I would never want somebody who called in, in pain, to be told ?We're working here. We'll call you back,'" Butler said.

It is still not clear how much of the clinic's medication was tainted with a fungus.

The Tennessee Department of Health said 477 of the 2,520 vials shipped to three facilities in the state, including Saint Thomas clinic, were not used. This suggests that all but about 20 percent of the supply was administered to patients.

Butler said he could not comment on the clinic's relationship with NECC. The Massachusetts pharmacy compounder faces multiple investigations including whether it broke state and federal laws by shipping medications in bulk.

The outbreak has been stressful for patients and the clinic's 15 employees.

"It has been one of the most emotionally taxing things on these employees over there, simply because every patient they are talking to is scared and in pain. It has been very tough," Butler said.

It has hurt the business of the clinic, which continues to pay its employees while as the facility remains closed.

It has also hurt the business of the clinic, which has continued to pay its employees full-time even as the facility remains closed and has received unwanted publicity.

The clinic is on the ninth floor of a building adjacent to Saint Thomas Hospital, which has sought to distance itself from the clinic since the outbreak, even though the two share some common ownership and part of the same name.

"The only center that received the tainted steroids was the ninth-floor Outpatient Neurosurgery Center, which is separate from the hospital or any other outpatient center on the Saint Thomas campus," Saint Thomas Hospital Dr. Robert Latham said last Friday in a briefing hosted by the Tennessee Health Department.

Saint Thomas Network, which owns Saint Thomas Hospital and other hospitals in Tennessee, also is a part owner of the clinic through a joint venture with Howell Allen Clinic.

The Tennessee Health Department said the clinic has been helpful in its efforts to investigate the outbreak and is free to reopen. But Butler said that will not happen soon.

"Obviously it's hurting business. Our concern right now is taking care of the patients. As we get down the road, we'll worry about the business," Butler said.

It's About Time Airplay Arrived in (the Other) McIntosh [Desired]

Wireless music might not be the status quo yet, but sooner or later, it will be. Even the snootiest, most elite audio companies will have to come around or perish. Fearing leaks, Japan's Softbank sprinted to close U.S. deal

NEW YORK/TOKYO (Reuters) - After months of secretive talks between "Starburst" and "Saturn" - codenames for Japanese telecoms firm Softbank and its U.S. target Sprint - fears that media leaks could scuttle Japan's biggest overseas buyout pushed negotiators into overdrive.

"All the dealmakers were in New York in the last two weeks," said a U.S. source familiar with the talks, which climaxed with Monday's announcement that Softbank Corp would pay $20 billion for control of Sprint Nextel Corp, giving the Japanese firm's billionaire CEO Masayoshi Son entry into the U.S. market and Sprint, the No.3 U.S. carrier, much needed cash.

"You get to a point where you're close enough to getting a deal done and we were really worried about leaks in the press, so we wanted to have the status of the deal ahead of the status of the leaks," said the source, one of several in New York and Tokyo interviewed by Reuters for this article.

Son, founder and one-fifth owner of the Japanese carrier, took the first concrete step towards the mega-deal when he met Sprint CEO Dan Hesse on a trip to California in late June, though brokers seem to have been shopping the U.S. firm for longer. Japan's No.2 carrier KDDI Corp said on Wednesday it was approached a year or so ago about buying Sprint, but declined to take part in talks.

Son, a rare risk-taker in conservative corporate Japan, says he began pondering some new bold move about two years ago, when he feared he had become mired in a defensive mode.

"I had set a management target of becoming debt free ... so I had bound myself by trying not to look at beautiful, wonderful things, like trying not to look at beautiful women. As a result, I felt I had become too defensive," the 55-year-old entrepreneur told Japanese TV after announcing the Sprint deal.

"I began to think, is it OK to end my life in such a mediocre fashion?" said Son, whose previous gambles include propelling Softbank, founded three decades ago as a software distributor, into the mobile business with the acquisition of Vodafone's Japan unit for $15.5 billion in 2006.

PERSONAL CHEMISTRY

Son and Hesse - an AT&T veteran with a fondness for sporting metaphors who got to know Son years ago when the Softbank chief invested in his telecom start-up Terabeam - had a relationship of trust that smoothed the talks, sources said.

"Personally, there was a very positive chemistry between Masa and Dan," a source in Japan said, noting both are hands-on managers who also take the long view about their firms' future.

That chemistry was on display at Monday's joint news conference, where Son, who attended the University of California, Berkeley, and Hesse, who went to the University of Notre Dame, demonstrated a first-name familiarity.

"It's difficult for me not to call him 'Masa' as I've known him for so long," said Hesse, who towers over the much shorter Son. "It's the first time I've ever seen him in a tie."

Son also turned to Jeff Sine, co-founder of boutique merchant bank Raine Group and a long-standing associate, as key banker on the deal rather than bigger houses, reflecting a preference for working with those he knows and trusts. Sine was "very critical to the deal," said the source in Japan, as was Ron Fisher, managing partner of Softbank.

Hesse led the talks for his Sprint team, alongside Keith Cowan, the carrier's president of strategic planning, and Doug Lynn, vice president of corporate development.

Son - whose strategic plan for Softbank's next 30 years includes becoming one of the 10 biggest companies in the world, with a market value of more than $2.5 trillion - was the driving force behind the deal, the sources said.

"This is Son's deal," said a second U.S. source. "He's the dealmaker."

"NETWORKED"

Appropriately for a cross-border deal that aims to shake up a U.S. market dominated by Verizon Communications Inc and AT&T, much of the Sprint-Softbank talks were done over the phone and by email, at least until the final dash.

"This was the most 'networked deal' I've worked on," said the first U.S. source.

"We'd end each day with lengthy conference calls with people in Tokyo. We'd start each day catching up with 100 email messages and then we'd have conversations with a variety of people in the U.S., the Sprint people, largely in Kansas," the source added. "There were fewer in-person meetings in this deal than any other of this scale that I can think of."

Despite his interest in expanding beyond Japan's ageing, saturated market, Son may have had doubts about whether buying Sprint was the way to go, given the increased debt load.

"Of course, there was thorough debate and I wouldn't say there was no opposition to the deal," said a Japanese source familiar with Softbank's internal discussions. "But there were those in favor of the deal, some even more so than Son."

A sense of urgency grew in the final weeks as fears surfaced that Japanese media, which often track executives' travel schedules for clues to business deals, had sniffed out the talks.

"You guys had the leak pretty early on, which was pretty distressing to those of us working on the deal," said the second U.S. source. Japan's NHK public TV and the Nikkei business daily broke news late on Thursday that Softbank was eyeing a 70 percent stake in Sprint. The deal followed just days later.

End-game talks on the complex deal, which involved at least three steps with two entities and a debt conversion and had to cope with U.S. regulatory issues, coincided with other transactions taking place around the edges.

But negotiators barely missed a beat after Softbanks's October 1 announcement that it would buy smaller rival eAccess Ltd. Also, U.S. carrier MetroPCS Communications, a potential Sprint target, agreed to merge with T-Mobile USA, part of Deutsche Telekom AG.

"In the middle of all this, just as we were getting really close, he (Son) announced the eAccess deal in Japan," the second U.S. source said. "He was doing a $2 billion deal on the side while we were doing the $20 billion deal."

BIGGER GOAL

Son has often stated his goal of overtaking Japan market leader NTT Docomo, but people close to the Sprint deal say he's aiming even higher. "Softbank is very interested in competing head-on with AT&T and Verizon," the first U.S. source said. "That's the goal."

Credit rating agencies and many investors fear Son may be miscalculating with his latest gamble, given the increased debt burden for Softbank and concerns that Sprint will still struggle to woo customers from its two bigger rivals. Reflecting those concerns, Softbank shares slumped 24 percent after news of the deal leaked late last week. By end-Wednesday, the stock had rebounded, but was still 9 percent below last Thursday's close.

But Son's fans say he'd likely bounce back and move on to the next challenge, given that he doesn't share the fear of failure that often holds back Japanese executives.

An ethnic Korean born to an impoverished family, Son has built Softbank into a near-3 trillion yen ($38 billion) company, making himself Japan's second-richest man along the way.

"He's made some mistakes in the past but he just runs over them," said a Japanese high-tech industry veteran. "That makes him different from other people in Japan."
