One in three women in the military have been sexually assaulted. Last week, Secretary Panetta ordered a review of all basic training programs to address these startling statistics. But why is sexual assault in the military so prevalent, and what can be done to combat it across the armed forces?
On a segment for HuffPost Live, host Mike Sacks discussed the culture that women in the military face with Jennifer Norris, a sexual assault survivor who joined the Military Rape Crisis Center to help find solutions for this decades-long crisis.
?There was nothing I could do at the time,? Norris recalled of her own assaults. ?The rape and the sexual assaults I probably could have gotten over had I been supported. But because I wasn?t supported, my PTSD just got compounded by the abuse that came from the retaliation.?
Norris and Sacks continued the discussion with Molly O'Toole, whose feature story inspired this segment, Rebecca Johnson-Stone, founder of WalkAgainstRape.org and Susan Burke, a civilian attorney on Military Sexual Assault lawsuits.
